Agreed. I could have bought a mirrored Tele, like the one Syd had, but it cost $1000.

Re: whats a good cheap guitar???

Perelandra, you'll enjoy that Ibanez, they're great.

I have a black Squire strat too. I had to take off the neck and file down the fret ends, cause the gooks who built it didn't bother to finish it right and it about tore my fingers first time I played it. Then I had to adjust the truss rod, cause they had it screwed up. However, after getting everything adjusted properly, it works pretty good. Has KILLER tone, surprisingly. Squires are good for a beginners first, but I would recommend that anyone interested in a strat save up the extra pennies and get an American Standard. The Mex ones aren't bad...I got one that is really well done, seems as good as an AS.

Teles are cool. Great tone. I've never owned one, though.

Luckily, it's easier to adapt from an acoustic to an electric than the other way around. If your Ibanez has a Floyd Rose-type trem, however, it may drive you nuts getting it tuned.

Rock on.

hmm im not really sure what trem it has, but the main thing driving me nuts is its just so damn heavy! & all those cords & to trip over (not to mention the change from nylon to metal strings was a shock to the fingertips..) but hey its all worth it of course

Re: whats a good cheap guitar???

Oh, I see what you mean. You've been playing a "classical" acoustic (with the nylon strings) which is quite different. I learned on a heavy-guage steel-stringed acoustic so when I first played an electric, it seemed so much easier with the slim body and light-guage strings.....annoying cord notwithstanding.

The cord sucks. I'm from the land of classical guitars, too. It's brutal.

Re: whats a good cheap guitar???

I've just started to learn guitar, and I'm looking to buy (acoustic) as soon as possible. I'm new to all this and I don't really know much about what to look out for, any advice?

Also so far I have been teaching myself (basic chords, and fingerpicking) It seems like a lot of people here play guitar, self taught or lessons??

Cheers

Re: whats a good cheap guitar???

A good, reliable acoustic guitar will cost next to nothing. For Christmas, back in '96, I got a Yamaha Eterna acoustic. I came out of the Sears Christmas catalog... it cost maybe $100 American. That guitar has been through everything since then... I've dropped it a billion times, I've scratched lines into the finish when I was mad, and the edges are completely chipped and wore away from being set on concrete in my garage. Yet... the guitar still plays great. It has very nice action. I couldn't ask for a better guitar. That Yamaha Eterna is simply indestructable. Hopefully, you can find a cheap acoustic (which you'll probably treat better than I did mine ) which sounds good and will last you a long time.

As for teaching, I am mostly self-taught. My brother has given me some major pointers along the way, but I learned a lot of chords by myself.
As for fingerpicking... let's just say I suck at that.

Re: whats a good cheap guitar???

I've got a Yamaha F-310 that cost about $200. It's a great guitar, not fancy, but it looks good and has great tone. The action is perfect. BTW, cool blue, that is one thing you'll want to check out. (action=height of strings above the fretboard) It's non-adjustable on acoustics, so you want to pick one that feels right to you. If the action is too high, it's hard to play the upper registers. If too low, you'll get fret buzz.
I was taught a lot by my Dad when I was a kid, but since, I'm self taught. BTW, I'm not that great. It's just a hobby.

Re: whats a good cheap guitar???

89.95 at Wal-Mart. Just bought it, a bit old in my opinion to learn, but I figure its only 90 bucks, if I never learn, well, at least I didn't spend a couple of grand.

Re: whats a good cheap guitar???

Yeah, I wish I had started to learn to play guitar years ago, but hey, guess it's never too late!

Thanks for the information. I went to one shop today, and the guy there advised a Yamaha F-310 or FG403MS. The FG is £70 more, but I'm sure I want to keep learning, so I figure I will go for that one?

Decisions decisions!!
