I wrote my English Cousework on 'Buying your first electric guitar' Assuming you want electric my coursework reccomends an Epiphone Les Paul or Epiphone dot. Also, a Squire Strattocaster or Telecaster. I think an australian $ is worth about 50 english Pence so you could probably buy any of them.

The Squire Strat is a good all-around choice. you can get one for around $150 -$200 US. (don't know the Australian/US excange rate). Get one if you can with a humbucker at the bridge for extra punch, or you can always put in a hot-rail humb (that is the same size as a single-coil).. They generally have a tremolo, and if you really wail on the whammy, you can put in locking (Schaller) tuners to keep it in tune.

another good (relatively) inexpensive one is the PRS Santana SE. It's based on the McCarty and has excellent finish and workmanship. It's got 2 humb's so it's tone is close to a Les Paul. (About $400 US) Also, the Epiphone Les Pauls, as mentioned.

One final thought, you might check out used musical gear stores. A lot of good guitars at good prices end up there. Just be sure whatever you choose, YOU like it.
