Re: the pros and cons of hitchhiking

I have to chime in here

When I bought The Pros and Cons, I was a huge fan of the Wall and the Final Cut. I had purchased ATD and KAOS. I was tremendously dissapointed in Pros and Cons and didn't listen to it 10 times in 4 years. However, I dug it out last year after reading a bit more about the story line. I find it more and more appealing as I get older. The lyrics regarding relationships and life make more and more sense to me.

Contrary to earlier posters, I found the use of dream sequences interesting and involving. The repeated use of a melody is a common theme in Pink Floyd stuff and other thematic music, I think it's great in providing a cyclical feel.

The bluesy guitar stuff sounds great to me. It really reflects the sad introspective state of mind that the protagonist is in throughout the album. I mean, what else would one listen to while sitting alone at a truckstop in the middle of the night?

It is just the opposite for me. I have no use for it anymore.

Re: the pros and cons of hitchhiking

Wasn't Jeff Beck the band's original first choice for Syd's replacement? Then they chickened out and asked Dave instead. Don't get me wrong, I love JB's guitar playing, but what an awful, awful, Waters-dominated Pink Floyd we would have had if not for Gilmour.

Re: the pros and cons of hitchhiking

I have Pros and Cons on Vinyl from when it first came out, and have recently been thinking of replacing it on CD. In the shops (in England) there seem to be a couple of versions, imports (from Canada?) with the bare arse unobscured, and a version with the arse blocked out.

Question - the bare arse aside (if memory serves, the model was some minger called Linzi Drew), is there any significant difference in terms of sound quality? None of them claim to be digitally re-mastered or any such tech-trickery.

Know what? That Jeff Beck was the first choice? It's only an interesting rumour. Or do you mean how do I know that Gilmour kept Waters from going completely overboard early on? I guess I don't. Just a guess.

I've seen both versions of the cover here in Canada. I don't think Pros and Cons or KAOS have ever been remastered. Amused To Death is, however, available in Sony's Super Bit Mapped CD format which is similar to the now-defacto HDCD format (ie better-sounding than regular CDs on the right equipment, but still backwards-compatible).

Re: the pros and cons of hitchhiking

Welcome Eugene Numb.

Here's hoping you have a long and enjoyable time playing with all the other Floyd fanatics. I know I have.

Now for the boring bit: please take a thorough look round the topics and threads before posting any new ones. This helps to reduce multiple duplicate threads, and everybody's blood pressure.

You can also use the site's very good SEARCH feature to speed up your browsing.

Now where the hell is that Shane G. when you need him/her/it?

I was off, reading a book.
You can take your job back now, BoaB. I liked it, but it became boring after one 'official' welcome.

Re: the pros and cons of hitchhiking

To lend my two cents:

I love Pro's & Cons. It's not as good as any Pink Floyd album or any other Roger Waters album, but I still listened to it like <exaggeration> five million times </exaggeration> after I bought it. The re-use of sound slipped past me.
One thing I have noticed though, is the basslines in SOYCD and Dogs. Has anyone else noticed how similar they sound? I could swear that Gilmour and Waters just slightly revamped the bassline to fit the new notes Gilmour played. I haven't looked at the tabbies for both songs, so I don't know yet, but I'm pretty sure there are many areas where the bass is exactly the same!

Also, I love Radio K.A.O.S.
