Right after I posted my answers, I began to get pangs that George played the Walrus in the MMT movie...

The original Walrus was John.

Paul played drums on Back in The USSR, Ballad of John and Yoko and I think Dear Prudence...the last one might not be right, I can't recall

Re: Beatles' "1" survey (please don't bite my head off)

I'm 9 years late to this party! Being a Beatles obsessive: Paul played drums on Dear Prudence.

I didn't buy "1" on principle. The first 2 tracks are wrong, wrong, wrong!
Love Me Do only made it to #17
Please Please Me, which wasn't included, was #1,on at least one of the UK charts.

bluddy 'ell!

"Love Me Do" later hit #1 on the Billboard chart in 1964, but yeah, it doesn't really make sense to open the collection, since it took two bloody years to reach that spot. I personally also prefer "Please Please Me" but it wasn't #1 on the charts they used to compile the album.

Then again, "For You Blue" was arguably a double A-side with "The Long and Winding Road" so they should have included that too (not that there is any room on the CD for another track).

It's nice to see 1 on the shop shelves again in a spiffy new digipak sleeve and with improved audio from the Beatles' 2009 remastering campaign. The original CD was never terribly satisfying due to excessive noise reduction and limiting.

Re: Beatles' "1" survey (please don't bite my head off)

So they fixed the sound on it? The original was frightening!
"The Long and Winding Road" wasn't a UK single. Just US (and possibly elsewhere).

As was usual in those days, the US had more albums and singles than the UK.
The UK had 22 singles and 12 albums to the US' 33 singles and 16 albums.
(What a long and convoluted story, the Beatles global back catalog is.)

It was nice in '87 when the international Beatles catalog was brought into line with the original Beatles sanctioned UK catalog. So instead of having to buy armloads of records to possess every Beatles song, you just needed the 12 UK albums, The Magical Mystery Tour album and Past Masters.
