How to Start a Progressive Rock Band

Hey all you boot wearin' fairies! Wanna start your own prog[ressive]-rock band? All you have to do is...CONFORM! That's right! Blend into what all the other predictable proggers are doing (i.e. King Crimson, Rush, ELP, etc.); start out with an album that has...eh, five or six tracks, and make sure most of them are long instrumentals, about 12 minutes long. Then make certain that the crap you're subjecting music listeners to is an overblown concept album. You know, make it the story of life on a space age planet or something else no one will be able to figure out without the liner notes. Then after you've tired your "creative" juices out, it's time to break up the band, only to gather for a reunion tour here and there. Got it? Super duper!

I just don't see what's wrong with Prog-Rock. I love King Crimson and prog-rock's other forefathers (Yes, Genesis, ELP, Rush , and a lot of great bands nowadays).
Also, Pink Floyd has some albums that would nicely fit into the progressive rock category.

IMO Prog-Rock bands are way more *talented* and *visionary* than most mainstream stuff that plays on the radio and MTV.

It's not my intention to star any debate or anything, it's just my opinion.

Bertin, I like King Crimson. Have you heard Islands?
I like RED and Starless. I think someone told me that Bill Bruford quit Yes to join Crimson.
He was great on the intro to Heart of the Sunrise.

Hey, it's nice to see a fellow King Crimson fan. Yeah I've heard Islands, great album. But I have to say that 'Red' and 'Starless and Bible Black' are higher on my list. And man, 'In The Court Of King Crimson' has to be one of the most powerful debuts in rock history. 'Larks' Tongues In Aspic' is also one hell of an album.

Bill Bruford is one heck of a drummer, whoever told you that he was in YES is right, in the late 60's. Then the guy played with Genesis in the 70's, before spending a quarter of a century with King Crimson.

Oh and Monty, not all Prog-rock has to be 10+ min. songs. Take for example Gentle Giant's 'Octopus' (their greatest album IMO), the longest song on that record is 5 min. I know short songs are rare among prog-rock bands, but hey man, if you have it, flaunt it.

On a side note, try and cool it Monty. You won't get any friend with an attitude like that. Considering you still think friends are not naive hypocrites.

Taking a quick glance at your signature above, I'd say you're probably between 16-21 years old, having an identity crisis, reading too many existential authors and trying to figure out some phylosophy books you still owe to the library. I bet you're also big into political satire, comic books and polish your sarcasm whenever you get the chance. I think every teenager goes through this phase, it's sad when they get stuck in it. It would be even sadder if you turned out to be over 21 and still be such a jackass, now THAT will never get you laid. . Please tell me I got at least ONE right.

it may be a reference to that. but i don't think black sabbath is prog. and i don't know how anyone can conform to "talkes from topographic oceans" but i do know that "the revealing science of god" is one of yes' best songs.
