Re: best song off of 'Piper at the gates of dawn'

i voted astronomy domine. yes because of this astronomy domine version. I like this version better than the ummagumma and pulse version. This song is awsome. It really is. I have really gotten into the albums song's details. And I still think astronomy domine is the best. it would have a very nice vibe. imagine it being played at a not so popluar yet really awsome small club. Some band coverin that. It's like reliving the 60's, or having a trip to space, without having to pay all that money. lol. But hell every song on that album is awsome. Besides Gnome, i really dont know what people see in that song.

It was a tough choice for me between Atronomy Domine and Pow R. Toc H., but Astronomy got my vote. I prefer Floyd's trippier tunes.

Two very trippy songs. The whole album is quite the trip, really.

It's a simple character profile and supposedly brings back childhood memories. Barrett also sings quite well on it. I like The Gnome.

I voted for Interstellar Overdrive. I could vote for Astronomy Domine too, but there is another version that I like much more.

PATGOD is a great album for tripping in the summer. Almost perfect, in fact, apart from the pseudo-spooky latter half of Pow R. Toc H. (terrible song anyway).

And anyway, in defence of the gnome - it's undeniably cute and is very charming. That's why it always makes my best of Syd lists.

Re: best song off of 'Piper at the gates of dawn'

I guess I hadn't voted on this before, so I picked Astronomy Domine, since that was the second Floyd I ever heard, and it totally got me hooked on them. If you want to hear psychedelic, just listen to that song, and you're taken to another world. I think Interstellar Overdrive is a little overrated, I can't get into it much past the initial riff. I thought it was an interesting little piece of improvisation, but then I heard the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray," and decided that Sister Ray totally wipes out IO in terms of noisy freakout-ness.

I've voted for Chapter 24, but The entire album is just wonderful!

It's my all-time favorite, and there is no song inside that I don't like.

Just fab!

Interstellar Overdrive for me.
Pow R. Toc H. has also always had a special spot in my heart.

Re: best song off of 'Piper at the gates of dawn'

What I find fascinating about Syd's work on this album is how he transferred so many influences into his very own and unique style. Take the pre-Deram-phase songwriting characteristics of his London pal David Bowie (David Robert Jones then) for example and see how they are mirrored and refuelled in Syd's work, and how clever Syd acknowledges that fact in a song like The Gnome. Which thus is the one I voted for here.
