Some are better LIVE!!!

I thought this would start an interesting thread. hope it does!

Well, as we all know some Floyd songs are better played live!

These are the ones *I* think are deffinetely better live (it makes no difference if you like the song or not, you can't ignore the fact that even if you don't like it, it does play *better* live, because I know DOW and WDYWFM are going to get bashed ):

- Dogs Of War
- On The Turning Away
- What Do You Want From Me
- A Saucerful of Secrets (especially on Pompeii)
- Comfortably Numb (from ITAOT and Pulse )

Opinions of mine worth noting:

- All of ITAOT is better than The Wall

- *All* the songs from Ummagumma Live are better on that album than the originals IMO

- Almost all the songs on Pompeii are better live, especially Celestial Voices, but... I like 'Echoes' studio version, just me... Same goes for Shine On.. and One Of These Days, Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar, the studio versions are worth more to me at a personal level

- DSOTM on Pulse is not better, but very good in my opinion

- I know of the issue of 'Raving and Drooling' and 'You Gotta Be Crazy' better than the ones on Animals, let's just say I like them both equally, since they *are* differente songs. RAD is worth noting because of it's angry intensity live, GREAT performances. BUT the studio recordings are pure bliss in my opinion, Sheep because of Wright and Dogs because of Gilmour

- Except for Interstellar Overdrive and Astronomy Domine, I think the rest of the tracks on PIPER are perfect as they are, I don't really like live versions of those, there's just something missing IMO.

- Perfect Sense 1 & 2 and Bravery of being out of range are amazing on In The Flesh. Maybe not better, but certainly equal and awesome!

- I own great bootlegs that expand on the songs on AHM, More, OBC and some from Ummagumma studio, even though some of them are deffinitely better, the studio albums still get more playing time on my stereo.

There's a lot more to be said, but I'll just bore you guys. Instead, what do YOU think???

See ya, and who knows which is which and who is who!

The 'Echoes' on Pompeii is better than the album version, I think. I don't know what it is, but it just comes through better live.

ITAOT is great... but I can't choose between it and the original (The Wall). I find that each version suits me for different moods... I listen to ITAOT if I'm angry or happy. I listen to the studio version if I'm depressed, sad, or tired (the original is a great album to go to sleep to, by the way).

Another song that the Floyd did great live was 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun'. The version on Pompeii is pretty cool, but I have a ROIO of them playing it in '69 or '70 - I can't remember the year - that is friggin' great.

,

-Shane

Pink Floyd always improved their songs in live performances.
A few additional titles:

Careful With That Axe Eugene.

Fat Old Sun: the live version was 12+ mins long, with a large instrumental section absolutely mind blowing.

Embryo: bigger, better, longer than the (unfinished) studio track.

Atom Heart Mother: I really like the versions without orchestra.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond: I prefer live versions from Gilmour’s era. His voice is better than Roger’s.

A Momentary Lapse Of Reason: the live versions are definitely better, the studio recordings have a computerized sound, the live versions have more feeling, the contribution of Rick Wright is stronger.

And obviously, as Bertin Brando stated, all on ITAOT is better than The Wall.

Dominoes performed recently by David was much more impressive than Syd's solo studio version of an hauntingly beautiful song.

Okay, this isn't really a fair comparison considering the sound and production quality, let alone Syd's abilities at the time, of the original wasn't all that great to being with.

I was mesmerized by David's rendition and since it was a slow song sung dirge-like, it was for me like a WYWH tribute in miniature, an extra tribute by David to Syd.

[CYNICISM] Perhaps Syd has run through whatever monies he's amassed and the generous David performed some of his songs to boost the regular monthlies for him. [/CYNICISM]

I can only say whats good live from the live CDs I currently have (DSOT and PULSE) but here's my list:

What Do You Want From Me?
Shine On
Dogs Of War
One Slip
Learning To Fly
On the Turning Away.

Those are main live favourites at the minute

Astronome Domine live is sooooo..... Can't stand it, now that I've got the song on Echoes and REALLY know what it should sound like........

You should hear how crisp, bright and powerful the BBC Live recording of Astronomy Domine sounds then.

Syd's loud "ooohing" and the blasting noise, insofar as PF music can be thought as "noise", created by him, Roger, Rick and Nick is something to behold indeed.

Fulminating Floydian,
Byron

p.s. I might have mentioned this before, but I think this performance was followed by the interview with classical music-reared weenie appreciating the band's talent but wondering why the music HAD to be played so loudly. Roger wasn't having any of his crap and just replied something like, ' "We were'nt reared on classical music and because we like it loud." '
Go figure

Yeah, I remember seeing it on the telly, and the "Prof" obviously didn't realise how stupid and snobbish his questions and opinons made him appear.

Live performances are always better when one is in the audience at the time.

Better played live...

"Learning to Fly" (PULSE version--the DSoT version mangled it)

DSotM was just incredible, live. As my first exposure to DSotM, I am very attached to the PULSE version.

"Astronomy Domine"

"Raving and Drooling" far surpasses "Sheep", in my opinion--"Sheep" destroyed a wonderful beat. I also admit to a strong dislike of the middle section of "Sheep", for personal reasons.

"Comfortably Numb" on PULSE (I can't even hear the low vocals on DSoT--it may just be a better )

Also, ITAOT is far better than the studio version of The Wall...COMPLETELY different. Because it is a real band effort--you can't exactly yell at someone right in the middle of a performance without severe embarrassment! I think Mr. Wright really shines here. I also enjoy Mr. Gilmour's playing...but I think some songs are at their absolute best on PULSE.

Cymbaline - This song is absolutely amazing live!! I don't know what else to say about it really, just listen to it.

All the other ones I love live, I think, have been mentioned. I'll just list them for the hell of it.

Astronomy Domine - Live 1967 I love the BBC version with Syd
A Saucerfull of Secrets
Let There Be More Light
The Narrow Way
Cymbaline
The Embryo
Green is the Colour/Careful with that Axe
Careful With That Axe
Vegetable Man - Have a live BBC version of this. I find it a bit more umm...exciting.
Atom Heart Mother
Fat Old Sun
Reaction In G - 1967 I'm not sure why I love this song.
One In A Million 1967 I think it's catchy
Raving and Drooling
Echoes
Set The Controls...
One Of These Days
Pigs

I think those are my favorites.

I agree that ITAOT is better than the Wall.
Expecially some songs as Mother, Young Lust and Run Like Hell.

But also many songs in Pulse are better than the studio ones. I like a lot Hey you (but is without Roger...), Comfortyably Numb, Learning to fly and ABITW with the great intro from THDOOL.

Shine On!!!

About ITAOT: not all songs are better than their Wall version. The Thin Ice (God, I love that song!) and Goodbye Blue Sky, for instance.

About Pulse: some versions are great, like Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell. But Astronomy Domine is awful, seems like the band is in a hurry. And the DSOTM version is very good, but I still prefer the original studio version.

About DSOT: perhaps the worse thing related to Floyd I've ever seen. I absolutely hate it.

About Ummagumma live songs: I like them all, mainly Careful With That Axe Eugene.

About Live at Pompeii: all the songs in Pompeii are great. The versions of A Saucerful Of Secrets and Echoes are specially good, as well as Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun.

About other live songs: well, IMO it depends of the version. I have two Atom Heart Mother versions. One is absolutely perfect, the other absolute crap. I don't like Raving and Drooling, nor You Gotta Be Crazy. I have some early recordings which I like very much... like pre-DSOTM versions of Us And Them, Eclipse and Live At The BBC stuff. It's all very, very relative...

Oh, boy, here we go!

For me, "Goodbye Blue Sky" was one of the ones that I found much improved on ITAOT.

"Astronomy Domine" on PULSE is awful? Personally, I like the faster beat...I can't explain why the feeling works so well, but it's like falling very fast through lakes of stars. It's almost impossible to articulate. But I just like the frantic feel of the PULSE version.

DSoT--Terrible mixing job on the recording...I'll agree. I suspect to BE at the concert was a whole different matter.

Bear with me for a while ok

Take a look at these songs:

- Time
- Wish You Were Here
- Us & Them
- Money
- Another Brick In The Wall Part II
- Comfortably Numb
- Run Like Hell
- Shine On You Crazy Diamond
- Learning To Fly
- Sorrow
- One Of These Days

All These songs appear on bothe PULSE and DSOT live albums. IMO the first 7 songs are better on PULSE. Can't make my mind on the other ones. What do you think????

The reason I posted this is because no one seems to cut some slack to DSOT. I don't think it's half bad, in fact I like it, for personal reasons though. And I think it has the *definitive* versions of a lot songs; 'Dogs of War' and 'On The Turning Away' come directly to mind.

Anyway, what do you guys think??!!
