Modern Remakes? Which songs from this era (and up to...oh, let's draw the line after AHM) could successfully be remade into a more modern form, and still remain true to the originals? My personal picks to attempt this with would be "Remember a Day" and "Interstellar Overdrive", but there are probably more that would work out successfully. In fact, I am even working a bit with the first (as much as my low-end keyboard will allow), to see how some different ideas might work. BTW--"Astronomy Domine" and "Set the Controls" are both out because they have been done recently.

Set The Controls from ITF was great. Even though I still love the original, especially on Ummagumma live album. That's why I preffer to see them more as two different songs, kinda like Raving and Drooling and Sheep. Does this make sense? I think most all the tracks on SOS need work, in fact Set The Controls and SOS itself are the only tracks that IMO were great live and the best songs on that album. Don't get me wrong I also love the rest, but seemed like 'Let There be more Light', 'Remember a Day' and 'See-Saw' needed more work, so maybe those would come out great in a re-working, especially by Mr. Wright. Maybe The Narrow Way, which is a great song as it is, could be reworked my Mr. Gilmour. Oh and maybe they could work on the sound effects of 'Alans Psychedelic Breakfast' and edit those a bit and put more emphasis on the music, especially Wright's. And the tracks on More are more folkish short songs or instrumentals, but all in all I really enjoy More. SOS IMO is the one that needs work. All the rest are not that dated and IMO shouldn't be meddled with, unless they actually impprove on it in a considerable way. Well, hope I made sense See ya, when that fat old sun in the sky is falling!

I wonder HOW some of the reworkings could be done? I have some ideas so far for "Remember A Day" (but I'll have to get into more detail later).

wouldn't you also have to discount the songs that dave did recently.

Yes, you're right...I think that would be "Terrapin", "Fat Old Sun" and "Dominoes", correct? (I may be wrong on the last title, because I am not very familiar with Mr. Barrett's solo work.)

Grantchester Meadows I've been dying to remake that song for ages, it just needs something... You should all hear my a capella vocal group do Set the Controls. It starts out innocently enough, then after the "heart of the sun, the heart of the sun..." bit we all start wailing and howling. There's a wailing, cacophanous climax and then STOP! ommmmmmmm.....

What part do you sing? I am a first soprano. And have you ever recorded this, made an MP3 out of it? (Hint, hint!) And what would you like to do to "Grantchester Meadows"? Personally, I think the 1969 Amsterdam version is fantastic. Is that anything like what you'd do to it?

I don't mean the following personally, but I cannot believe the staggering arrogance of Floyd fans believeing they can do better than the band members themselves in producing PF songs. Even if the lads, together or singly, don't think much of whatever pieces of music they don't think much of, how many times has a regrettable cover version cropped up to disgust the majority of PF fans? Of course, my objections are nothing to stop any of you, but I'll be looking out for you when I'm next in your town. ![]() BTW FloydWright, it's amazing that you haven't familiarised yourself with Syd's solo stuff since Richard was the organist on BARRETT. Surely you knew this already. No? Last edited by Bride of a Bull; 05-23-2002 at 04:37 AM.

I do have Mr. Barrett's work from Wouldn't You Miss Me, and I thought it was pretty nice. Oh, and who said anything about "better"? Furthermore, when I first started this thread, I was wondering about what the Floyd itself (or some of its members) might do if they decided to bring one of their oldest songs back.

D'OH! ![]() My mistake then. In that case, I can say that David's recent version of Dominoes was very good indeed. I'd say better than the original mainly because of that thorny "witnessed Live" issue and my personal preference for David's singing...on ALL things Floydian. But you already knew that.

I msut agree with Byron, Floyd songs should be left as they are. Not attacking anyonw for trying to figure out something new to do with them but Floyd is just something you DO NOT cover! As for Mr barrett's works. I think we all know what my opinion is. cheers my Floydian friends Last edited by Sydney; 05-24-2002 at 11:00 PM.

But what about the Floyd itself doing its own songs? And technically, any time you so much as SING or WHISTLE a Floyd tune to yourself, you're covering it. And what if (horror of horrors) you should be accompanying yourself with an instrument as you do this? One of the things about music is that it can give a great deal of joy not just to hear, but to perform it, especially to those who are musically inclined. It's not that you're trying to OUTDO the Floyd, but show how it affected you. It's not sacrilege. The only thing I would have a problem is if someone wanted to profit off of it without asking the Floyd for permission. Otherwise, I think that's akin to infringing upon freedom-of-speech.
