Not really sure but Rick and Dave have had the best I think. I prefer their styles to Rog's, they flow more easily to my mind. Dave's solo albums kind of remind me of Mike Oldfield to a certain extent (another fav artist) and Rick has a nice sound as well.

My vote goes to Broken China, which is a great solo album. I notice that Zee-Identity isn't in the poll... even if it's not one of the best efforts it should be included. I think also that it's unfair include ITF in this poll because it's a live with a *greater* part of Pink Floyd songs and a very small part of solo material.

I know, I also felt kinda guilty about putting ITF on the poll, but it *is* a solo "effort". I mean it's not a band album, and he did have 6 of his solo songs on there, not to mention 1 new song (that's basically why I chose to add it) and a new re-working of Set The controls, I know that's a Floyd song, but I always thought it to be more Roger's than anyone elses. Kinda like you feel 3/4 of Piper is more Syd than anyone elses. Don't know if I made sense, I just thought it was a Waters effort worth adding, and about Zee-Identity, well... you're right what can I say, should have been on there.

Oh and thanks for backing me up, Thorin, old buddy, old pal

I marked all except the following: Pros and Cons, MftB, and ITF, and Mason (haven't heard enough to judge, in the last case).

To rank these efforts a bit differently...

#1--Broken China
#2--Amused to Death
#3--Wet Dream
#4--Radio KAOS
#5--About Face
#6--David Gilmour

Deciding between #3 and #4 was solely on frequency of how much I listen to them. Technically, that should be a tie.

All of these are deserving albums, however, because I thought they were "voteworthy".

Red face hmmm... mmmultiple...

Good idea Bertin... but I find it weird to have multiple choices on a "best solo effort" poll... that's why I chose only one.

And that is Amused to Death.
I am really surprised that this isn't turning out to be everyone's number 1 choice... some other albums are "good" (amongst them are other 2 Waters records), but I kinda feel there is a rather large gap between ATD and every other solo record.

FloydWright: I knew your first 2 would be those, but I didn't expect you to rate "About Face" higher than "david gilmour"... does it have anything to do with your weakness for cheap-80's sound?

cheers everybody

Well, the 80's sound is not a detracting factor.

But it comes also from the fact that I feel I can identify better with the lyrics on that particular album. I enjoy "Let's Get Metaphysical"--it's actually one of my favourite DG-authored instrumentals. "Murder", "Out of the Blue", "You Know I'm Right", and "Near the End" each have a bit of a resonance with me. I know some of you might feel rather sad about my mentioning this, but the tragedy last year is what made me actually understand the feelings in "Murder". So I just kind of understand what he's saying.

I voted for Broken China. It's just superb.

However, both of Gilmour's solo efforts also get alot of airplay in my house. DG is a great, guitar-based album (I can listen to Raise My Rent all day long), and even About Face has it's good stuff. Like FWr, I like Let's Get Metaphysical and Near The End. Near the End is a fab tune - I love the way Gilmour fades out the acoustic solo while bringing up the electric to hit that sustaining note that only Gilmour can make sound like that. I also like Out of the Blue - a nice simple song with great lyrics.

Because I didn't mention Rog's efforts...I guess I'm a bit biased towards Gilmour and Wright as far as solo efforts go...

To say the truth, I have never had much interest in Floyd members' solo works. But, anyway, for me the best one is Broken China - there's for sure only one person Richard Wright in the world!

Anyway, I prefer Radio KOAS to the others I've heard, which is sadly only consisting of Waters stuff

Has anyone actually heard Mason's solo stuff? You never see it in the record shops, even if you look very hard. And as for Zee, well....

And BTW, FWr isn't the only one with a weakness for the 80s sound. I happen to like some 80s music myself. I can't put a name to the sounds I like but the electronic sound is brilliant (as in Visage and Gary Numan). Thats probably why I voted for the 80s solo efforts as well (its not necessarily electronic but the overall sound is good).

Well, I was wondering who voted for Mason's stuff because I see it has received two votes. Well, Mason fans, explain your vote, it's your moment! I am seriously interested in fan's opinions about these works. I heard just some samples from Nick's solo efforts and I don't know if I want to buy his albums... :shakehead

MY, just one word, mate: UGH!

I only ever owned one, Fictitious Sports, and like my only LP of the Mamas and the Papas Greatest Hits - both bought during momentary lapses of reason - wished I'd never done so. Gave the M&P one away, I think.

And yes, I still have the Mason one. Yes, PF anorak am I.
