BEST of Syd Barrett!

I know, I know, and I already feel guilty about reviving this thread. Echoes of Syd Barrett I think it was called. But I just recently got into his solo work and was plesently surprised. Here are the songs I've listened and loved:

- No Good Trying
- Dominoes
- Effervescing Elephant
- Baby Lemonade
- Bob Dylan Blues
- Opel
- Here I go

These are the ones I really liked

Does anybody know of more worthwile? If you want to post top 10 lists go ahead, I just think more attention should be paid to Syd's solo work. I know he can be of acquired tastes, but still...

I'd like to burn me up a cd (I feel guilty of doing that also) with Syd's stuff, I'm going to add the ones I mentioned, but I still have lots of room. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Smile Need Some Advice

Hi, this is for anyone who cares to help. Even though I predict Thorin will get here first.

I really want to get into Syd's solo stuff, which album should I buy first? And which one after that? I may get some money in next week, that would be a great purchase.

Anyone care to share opinions on their takes from Syd's solo albums?

Anyhow, thanks in advance!

oh yeah i forgot you say something. if you want to, you should get the ones that have the bonus tracks. they have different takes or the acoustic versions of the songs. they are way better than than standard versions of the albums. you can get them seperately or get the box set.

bertin_brando,

Your prediction was correct, for all the definitive help it provided. ( to thorin).

Although the sleeve notes of Barrett claim that all involved considered The Madcap Laughs the superior of the pair, I found the former to be far more musically accessible than the latter.

There seem to be more complete, more "polished" recordings on Barrett rather than Syd alone on the guitar and singing on "Madcap." Barrett also contains more of my favourite songs than the other, as well as the track which gives me my PFfanNet nickname, namely Maisie, and Baby Lemonade, Gigolo Aunt and Effervescing Elephant.

"Standing right where I stand."

Anyone who is domesticated in the U.S. :

Is The Madcap Laughs or Barrett available on CD in the States? I've never seen it around.

"Barrett" is available. I have not seen "Madcap" in a while. I am in Portland, Or. "Barrett" was 12 dollars. I actually own the vinyl release with both albums on it. I got it in New England years ago. Are you familiar with that one? I doubt it will ever be on cd.

Shane G.,

I was indeed domesticated in the U.S., but pedantically domiciled in the U.K. currently, and wonder why you cannot look outside of the U.S. for your answer...

The Madcap Laughs - Audio CD

Barrett [STUDIO] - Audio CD

Both at GB£7.99 (@today's rate = US$11.65) and maybe a couple bucks extra for overseas postage and you could well have the CD inside of ten days.

Thank you, BoaB.
Always there to give advice...

BTW, I didn't mean to say 'domesticated' in the original. I meant to say 'domiciled'... only I couldn't remember that word when I first posted.

I actually got my cd copy of MADCAP from amazon or tower. I just haven't seen it in a U.S. record store. If you don't have a credit card your local store can always order it for you. I'm sure there ARE record stores in america that keep it in stock. The good ones, I should think!

Always a pleasure, matey.

I keep forgetting I take my various, happily unused, plastic for granted when chatting and recommending, etc, and have to remember not everyone can use eCommerce...yet.

Thanks to sarah for reminding us all that the "clicks & mortar" retail combination still thrives, and we should encourage our local music stores to stock or order in our selections. Make 'em work for their wonga.

But isn't the Leeloo-Dallas-Moolti-PASS-like debit card used just about everywhere now? This is generally what I use when Net shopping, hell, with ANY shopping nowadays. Cash? What's that except mugger fodder?

Surely even high school (or equivalent) aged people can have various bank accounts with a debit card these days?

My only familiarity with Mr. Barrett's solo work is through Wouldn't You Miss Me, but I'll give this a shot anyway.

I am very partial to the organ on "Long Gone".

I also like "Golden Hair"...can't explain why. Very simple, but it's a catchy sequence both to listen to, and to play on my guitar.

I also enjoyed "Late Night", but half the fun was in the mental mixing in of PF members' work. I thought a Hammond, some Richard Wright vocal harmonies (which you often find with Mr. Barrett in his PF works), and I even mixed in a little DG-style guitar work!

There are other good ones, but with my lack of familiarity, it's sometimes hard to put names to titles, or even to think of all of my favourites. There's another one that I THINK may be "Opel": "I'm trying..." Anyway, that's my two cents (probably all it's worth, anyway!)

------

And a few other notes. Am I the only person here who feels no need to have a debit card?

Also, I am lucky enough to have a bookstore/music store in my area that (at one point when I checked) had ALL of Mr. Barrett's albums in stock. I'll have to check again to see if it's still the case; the last time I looked in that section was in December.

yeah you are correct. it is opel. i also don't feel the need to have any plastic. i feel it will drain my power when i hold it. soon i will have people calling me asking about the huge debts i owe.
