I will never watch The Simpsons again The Brazilian people and society are being insulted, and the excuse we hear is that it's just a "satire". Satire? Since when the objective of a satire is to defame a nation by showing only its negative side? The episode shows the city of Rio de Janeiro as a bizarre jungle: monkeys, kidnappings and people dancing the Macarena. It has gone beyond the point of trying to show and/or understand what it's not of its writer's account; our culture is distorted, and that is the worst part of it all for me. As seen before, with France and other countries, the "typical American family" thinks that they have the right to criticize in a destructive way everyone who doesn't follow their consumist, futile way of life. Of course, I don't live in a perfect place. Obviously Brazil has their problems like any other place in the world. The problem is that I just can't understand the reason of such unnecessary kind of thing. Sorry if anyone feels offended with something I said. Last edited by cho.manno; 05-23-2002 at 02:54 PM.

Hmm...I will need to watch the offending episode to be able to agree with you or not, but if what you say is true, I shall be very disappointed with my all-time favourite American TV show. Of course, as I think you implied, this may very well just be an example of the narrow viewpoint of the writer , but ignorance is no defense. But remember, it IS a cartoon, not a documentary or travelogue and the rules of existence in Simpson World are not the same as the Real World. I rather doubt "the typical American family" had much input on whether or not to produce the Simpsons or any other media content. You misinterpret the possible objectives of Light Entertainment producers who may well think they have the rights you stated with those of largely oblivious, innocent people. And don't come the raw prawn either, mate. I am sure Brazil does it's fair share of ribbing and ciriticising of others, including foreigners and foreign lands. I have visited many countries - sadly not yet Brazil but oh how I want to so much - and without fail, each of those different peoples thought theirs was the best EVER, whatever "it" was, and usually stuck it to their respective opposite or adversary countries. America's just lucky enough to be the butt of jokes by more countries than it bothers to attack. Erm...it's just satire? ![]() Friendly Floydian, Byron Last edited by Bride of a Bull; 05-23-2002 at 07:12 PM.

It's not like the Simpsons try to make the US seem like the promised land. They poke fun at everyone and everything, inclluding themselves, so I wouldn't take too much offense at anything said. I am currently a resident of the Greater Toronto Area, and thought the Simpsons little trip to Toronto quite amusing.

That has never been a show I watched, so I have no idea what exactly they did, or in what context (from what I hear, they are equal-opportunity satirists). But I WILL tell you I would never take something like that seriously. I think most people know better. Unfortunately, the media is not always the best reflection of America.

jebus, lighten up already. It's not like they never 'insulted' america itself. Or what about Cuba, in that 1 trillion dollar bill episode? And Groening already publically apologized about it.

The Simpsons are bad for an entirely different reason, they ran out of ideas about 5 years ago. "What's that?" "We call it a bullfrog." "That's a funny name, we would've called it a wuzzle wazzle." Paraphrased from the Aussie episode.

I have friend who spent two weeks in Japan on an exchange program, she claims that Japanese TV is really like that, scary shite eh? No offence to any Japanese memebers here by the way ![]() cheers |

Poor Brazil... my friend's favorite tennis player is from there. Anywho, you know what I hate about The Simpsons (although it's probably not their fault)? On the episode where they build a wall across the town, it's really stupid that they have The Who and not Pink Floyd. It would make a lot more sense with Roger Waters and not Roger Daltry... Then again, it's probably not their fault because they probably asked Pink Floyd and they didn't want to do it or something. So oh well!

A guy that I work with, Mike, has a Japanese girlfriend and we were sat about discussing the Simpsons a few nights ago, whilst it played in the background. Anyway, I was mentionming the fact that the Japanese haven't warmed to America's Greatest Family in the style of the rest of the globe, owing to the fact that they've got some weird problem with the fact that Homer et al have only 3 fingers and a thumb. She enlightened me slightly with regards to the fact that, within the Yakuza, if you do something wrong, you get docked a finger and because the Simpsons lack one of their digits, it strikes a negative chord in downtown Osaka. She then paused for effect and said: "And they're yellow." Sheer, naturalistic genius. Cheers, Mark
