Thorin, man... that's COLD!

As for the recording anomalies:
Recording anomalies are little mess-ups, edits, and various other things that aren't supposed to be in the recording. Like, say Bowie did one line of vocal off-beat, and that made it to the finished recording. That's an anomaly.
Likewise... for PF, there aren't many of those. One obvious one is the edit in Matilda Mother, where the solo turns into a verse. That is a really bad edit. Because that is a bad edit, and it made it to record, that is an anomaly.

If you're interested, this link will take you to the recording anomalies of the Beatles. It is a great site... and they can explain 'anomaly' better than I can.

Re: The Gunners Dream

Oh.

There are many anomalies to be found in David Bowie albums, especially the earlier ones. Stuff like punch-ins, edits. The most obvious stuff to find, though, are were either Bowie or his backing musicians mess up.
I wish my site were up... I would direct you to it!

BTW, had you seen the Beatles anomaly site before?

Re: The Gunners Dream

a few things:

The poppy fields: Poppy often grew over battlefields as the corpses would be excellent fertilizer, thus poppies came to remind vets of the battlefield.

The explanation I was given a long time ago was that the Final Cut is written (primarily) from the perspective of a military man who has arrived home from the Falklands War and is dealing with his inner demons. Because a few songs tossed off the Wall (ie. Fletcher Memorial Home) reference Roger's dad, it's presumed that Roger is imagining himself as the returning soldier. In "The Hero's Return", the soldier is left to get a job as a school teacher in the post-war UK. At night the memories of the war remain, and he's often left thinking about the wishes of a friend who died in the campaign. His friend's wishes are outlined in "The Gunner's Dream". Regardless, it's a beautiful touching album.

Re: The Gunners Dream

Nickerbockers? SydSlaves? Bleuh, never mind.

There are more than a few PF anomalies, Shane G... especially on early recordings! My favourite is the drum punch-in on One Of These Days. Maybe we should start compiling a list.

Re: The Gunners Dream

Where is that punch-in on OOTD?

Maybe we should start a list. I know that there's quite a few mistakes on Atom Heart Mother and Piper.

At 4:37, you can hear the cymbals drop out. It's just before the snare rush, which I guess took a few takes to get right. It's one of those anomalies that's hard to hear at first, but sticks out every time you hear it afterwards.

Indeed there are. This sounds like it could be a cool project indeed.
