And don't think the cops won't hear about it, too.

Re: Actual, proper real vinyl

I've got a Numark turntable. It's a quite good piece of equipment. I just need a new stylus for it, but those things can get expensive.

I've got a nice turntable, and no rarities. Some of you guys have good rarities, but no turntable. What an odd balance.

Re: Actual, proper real vinyl

My turntable's been missing it's stylus since a budgie(!) landed on the needle arm.

The tune that was playing at the time was 'Music makes you lose control' by Les Rhythmes Digital.

There is humour there, but it took me a while to see it.

Cheers,

Mark

Re: Actual, proper real vinyl

A budgie? Weird!

And it bet that 'unexpected landing' screwed up the record, too. I feel for you.

Once, I was playing a very well-preserved copy of Holstev's (?) 'The Planets'. It sounded really nice. Then, I got up to adjust the volume. As I was walking away, I tripped on the turntable's power cord. The damn thing flew off my desk, with the record still playing! The turntable landed face down. The record got scratched to hell, and I was lucky that I had left the dust shell on the turntable, or the needle would have gotten screwed up.
The dust shell was cracked beyond repair. May it rest in peace.
Ever since then, it's played records well. The headshell has a bit of a slant, however. I can't adjust it.

Re: Actual, proper real vinyl

Ahh, strolls down memory lane, Shane....G.

It was my habit to always record onto high-quality ferrous cassette tape all my vinyl the first time I played them on my Sansewage FR-Q5 (fark U, 5!) - a whole other (is "nother" a word?) story, indeed. A lovely, trouble-free Technics model would soon replace it.

So it was when I'd got my hands on an half-speed mastered copy of DSoTM and was duly recording it, when there was an almighty THARUMP-BIDDLE-BUMP from the stereo area. It was my jettest-of-black-on-black cat, Phydeaux being fascinated by the spinning prism on the LP label, perched on the corner of the table, the fukka!

Of course, she didn't know any better, and looking up at me scowling at her with that sweet feline innocence of hers was really the only thing that saved her. The LP, again luckily for that darned cat, was undamaged but to this day, some 20 years hence, that same "interruption" can be heard on the tape. Ahhh, Phydeaux.

Felinostalgic Floydian,
Byron:

I've got a mint condition STEREO copy of Dark Side of the Moon, which cost me $9.99 at my local vinyl place. It came with the posters and stickers, too. The only reason I supposed it was so cheap was the fact that it was a Capitol 'rainbow label' release, which I think came out in 1992 or therabouts.
But the cool part is this... there are slight differences in the mix on this LP than the regular CD and orginal LP release. There are too many differences than I can post here, but I'll point some out if anyone would like to know.

BTW, fixxlevy: First, go buy that blue vinyl DSOTM promo. Then, go out and buy a decent record player. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. LPs get better sound than CDs in some situations, especially if you want more bass. LPs are awesome.

Funny you say that, my vinyl copy of Dark Side has 'Quadrophonic Sound' printed on the cover, and it too has some different mixes. On 'Us and them' there is a saxaphone phrase that is not on the cd version, and also on 'Any Colour You Like' there is a guitar part at the very end which I positively cannot hear on the CD. The synth solo at the beginning of 'Any Colour' is also much louder and powerful on the vinyl, but this may just be the differnt sound that vinyl produces, rather than a different mix.

Re: Actual, proper real vinyl

Do you have a quadrophonic LP player, or is it the quadrophonic mix condensed to stereo? The East Germany edition of DSOTM (before rock music was heavily restricted) was the quad mix in stereo. But I guess there are other instances of this happening on other editions!

That's cool. Mine is just a standard stereo copy (1992 re-issue), and it has these odd little differences in the mix.

Suppose I report it somewhere someday... can't quite be arsed.
