Delicate Sound of Thunder is a double CD set documentating the 87-88 tour and was recorded over five nights at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York in August 1988.

Delicate Sound of Thunder was released in the Soviet Union as two separate albums (A60 00545 007 no. 1 and no. 2). Russian cosmonauts brought the CD-version with them on their trip to the space station MIR.

It was the last Pink Floyd release made with vinyl as its primary medium; all subsequent releases have been made with CD as their primary medium.

The album's cover design is by Storm Thorgerson.
