Lightbulb New Translation service and Quick Reply Box

We have two new features in All Pink Floyd Fan Network:

1) A translation service, provided by freetranslation.com, available on nearly all of our pages - now you can translate those hard to understand lyrics or fan posts to your own language, by only clicking a button!

2) A quick reply box: now you don't need to click the "Reply" button to post a reply on a thread. You can reply right there, in the page you're viewing the thread. The only fallback is that you won't be get such a detailed "Reply" box, with vB Code, smiles and options. Still, it's pretty good for people who want to reply pretty quick.

Check the screenshot to see what we're talking about:

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this!

Re: New Translation service and Quick Reply Box

Unfortunately, freetranslation.com only offers a few languages. I'm searching the Internet to see if I can find another translation service. If I ever find one that translate to Romanian, I'll let you know.

Re: New Translation service and Quick Reply Box

Another good idea from the desk of Paulo. Cheers mate.

Now, onto the member registration "Byron Briefing" as stratman called it - please don't call it that if you manage to include it - being my general advise about browsing the site before posting new threads to avoid duplication.

Keep up the excellent work, Paulo.

Re: New Translation service and Quick Reply Box

Hey Byron,

Glad you liked it, even though I don't think you'll use the translation as much as the quick reply box.

Anyway, great suggestion. I already implemented it in the message users get after confirming their e-mail addresses. This is what it looks like now:

Thanks for this great idea!

Ó, nao ser tão certo, meu amigo.

Excellent, so now I should be able to retire my welcoming pen...er, keyboard. And the idea was all stratman's, so kudos to him.

As always I am glad to be of help.

Re: New Translation service and Quick Reply Box

Hey P-

You know, this must be costing you a fair amount of cash monthly to provide us with such a comprehensive fansite... I was wondering, if it would help out, if you've considered making this a paysite? I know that it must sound like I'm cutting my own throat here, but I'd be happy to donate an annual or monthly nominal sum, if it meant that it was helping you out. I used to go to www.fugly.com for porn and filthyness mpegs, but that became a paysite, so I didn't bother. However, this site is part of my day to day and I'd like to feel like I was contributing to it in some way... I'm sure that other long term members would agree with these sentiments and at least consider the benefits of a site with more money behind it, right?

Anyway,

altruism,

Mark

Thanks for your kind words and concern, Mark, I really appreciate it. I run this website since 1995, mainly because I really like to do so. Even more now, when I see a lot of floydians interacting together, although I don't often participate in discussions. Of course there are many costs in running this website, and that is one of the reasons why we recently changed hosts (besides that we were having a lot of down time), because it was starting to get really expensive to be on a semi-dedicated server and all. And that is why we have to have these banners on the top and bottom of the pages, even though I hate them. That's our main source of income right now, and we're being able to break even on most months. So, as of right now, I really appreciate your support in case this ever turns into a pay site. I'll avoid that at all costs, as long as we can survive with the revenue we get from those dreadful banners and all. But I'll tell you how you (and all other users) can help: word of mouth. Tell all your floydian friends about our place, so we can keep on growing and having more and more people interacting. That would really make me happy.

Thanks again, m8.

PS: Nice picture you got there, you're looking much nicer than last time I saw ya.

Re: New Translation service and Quick Reply Box

I'd like to say kudos to Mark for his selflessness, and also to second the notion. While I don't believe making this a paysite would be fair to the casual drifter. Myself and others, there are probably ten or so of us, probably use 90 percent of it. If it ever need be, I'd like to contribute, become a patron of sorts. I'd hate for this site to be unavailable due to economic reasons.

Re: New Translation service and Quick Reply Box

Third, and carried, I think.

I had just the very thought the other day when I decided to get my own damned high-speed connection instead of freeby piggy-backing on a neighbour's, (often down because of non-payment of bill, the gits) that there must be some way for this devoted community to subsidise APFFN in some nominal way to help Paulo buttress this lumbering behemoth against the ravages of downtime.

At times when the site is down, I'd gladly wire a fiver there and then to Paulo if ONLY he could somehow get the site back up, there and then. I am sure Paulo makes every available effort, and certainly that most glitches are beyond his ultimate control - there must have been a misplaced semi-colon here, too few full-stops there or whatever at least once.

It may sound sad and that one should get a life, but this is a good place for Floydians of all flavours, Any Colour You Like, if you will, and I have certainly learned and had discovered for me things I hadn't known before joining. So for just that, it's of value to me.

As and when, Paulo, as and when, buddy, but I think there's yet some space, bottom-right where you could squeeze in another banner.

NNJ, anxiously awaited is your elevation unto The Guild. Get a move on, will ya?!

Re: New Translation service and Quick Reply Box

Thanks, Not Now John and Byron, your support really touches me heart (with a Beatles accent).

Speaking of word of mouth, I just addeed a "Refer Friends" page that you can access by clicking here or through the very bottom of our pages. That way, besides letting your friends know about this board in an easy way, you even get referral points, which may be redeemable in the future for something cool. I don't know, maybe a bigger avatar or whatever.

Anyway, as I said, our site has been online since 1995 and I don't plan on shutting it down anytime soon. If it ever gets to the point where it's not viable economically, I'll be sure to let you know so we can find a way to keep it online. Fortunately, as of right now, these banners and the products we sell through our affiliates are doing the trick. But again, I thank you for your support. Or, as Gilmour says, "thank you very much indeed".
