The next Mr. Waters? i wish ...

Hi all, again.
I now have a new Bass guitar, but a shoddy one though, since im only learning.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what equpiment Roger used? ie. Bass guitar/s amps etc.
And another thing, is there a more extensive range of bass tabs elsewhere? as the ones on this site are limited, but they are wonderful.
Really apreciate it.

Congrats on the new bass, Several Species!

Rog used a Rickenbacker 4001 bass from early on until about 1969. Since then, he has used a series of Fender Precision basses.

A bass-related question: has anyone here played a Rickenbacker 4001? They look so cool, but I haven't played one.

Basses and Tabs

Roger Waters used a plethora of instruments.
Barrett Years as said above a Rickenbaker 4001S (sumburst w/ rosewood fretboard.)
Until 1969- He used the Rickenbaker and a Fender Precision Bass.
Early 70s and present- used the P-Bass and Nylon Strink acoustics, and a Fender Stratocaster.

Well, I have played one, although only once in my life (but I'm only 19, so I can still hope it'll happen again), and I was really impressed!
The sound, the tone, the overall feel, I mean, the sounds that the Ric 4001 allowed me to create seemed almost phisical entities!
So great... definitely my dream bass.

A Dream Come True....

I've been talking to several musicians about starting a band. It will (of course) be a band in the style of Pink Floyd, but also touch on hard rock (zeppelin style), and some Stevie Ray Vaughan blues. I am just learning the guitar, but as soon as I get about 3K I'm boing to have Fender Custom shop hook me up with a 1984 Fender Strat, hot rod red, maple fretboard, '57 reissue like what Gilmour plays. I luckily have the recipe for it too. And if I decide to do a little bit on the bass, I'd love to try and find a Rickenbaker 4001S mainly because, although simple with style, Waters rocks on bass.

Rick 4001 basses can be found if you do a little searching... but, man, they are expensive.

However, it's worth the money because Ricks are made with care, here in America (no insult to people in other countries... I'm sure your country could make a fine guitar, too). And they are largely handmade, also. So the money is worth it!

Made in America...

Fenders, Gibsons, and Martins are made in America too. I have a Martin, not an expensive one of course, but damn does it blow the wall out on most Gibsons. And I wouldn't mind having a Les Paul made in Memphis!

And yes, Rickenbaker's rule. Harrison played one, and so did most rock legends.

But are Parkers as good as they say?

Was I the only one who caught the irony of Roger playing a strat that looks exactly like Dave's on "Bravery Of Being Out Of Range" on the In The Flesh Live DVD? Coincidence? HA!

Lucifersam...just curious about the "recipe" on Dave's strat. How detailed is it?

Gilmour's recipe for axe heaven.

Well, I made an error, its a 1984 Fender Strat '57 reissue.
Candy Apple Red
w/ white pickguard
Shortened tremelo arm
maple fretboard
EMG SA pickups,
EMG EXG expander (bass and treble boost)
I also have another magazine somewhere telling of his method of wiring his system where it cannot pick up the random scrapes and mistakes while picking chords. It's his noiseless set-up.
Need anything else?

Thanks, Bro. I have a strat that's the red crimson transparent with the maple neck (22 frets, though) that looks a lot like Daves, and I'm going to get the EMG-DG20 active pickups like you described. I was wondering if it gave the length of the shortened trem arm, type of tuners, etc. It don't matter, tho, I doubt I'd shorten the arm anyway. It's interesting stuff to have on file though...Thanks again!

Strangely enough, last night I dreamt I was in a local guitar store, playing a bass. I've never played bass before, yet it was so much fun! Not that what I was doing was CORRECT (it WAS a dream), but oh, it was fun!

I played bass for a short while in a rock group. It's kinda fun. I had a '67 Hofner "Beatle" bass (like Paul McCartney plays). What a sweet axe. I should set my head on fire for giving it away.

Dreams are closer than they appear...

Yeah, I've had dreams like that before. You know, where you are playing an instrument and the sound comes out perfect, but you don't know what the hell you're doing. But then I wake up at school in my underwear. What a sick, sad world...
