Favorite Prog-Rock Band?

What is your favorite Progressive Rock band???

In fact, post anything you want about prog-rock. Wether you like it or not, get it or not, what's your favorite album, etc.

On a side note, as much as I admire prog-rockers, they don't speak to me as well as Floyd's music does!

i voted for yes, ELP, newer stuff, and king crimson. i hate dream theater though. they are good at what they do but i don't like the singer and its a bit to metally. have you seen the dvd? its gay. there are three bands that i've heard of that i want to hear: camel, caravan, and gong. have you, or anyone else, heard them?

Gong is good if you get the early to mid 70's. The band had a complete line up change and turned into something quite different. Still ok but not the same. How about Gentle Giant?
Some jethro tull? ELP Trilogy, pictures, tarkus, brain salad surgery. Yes close to the edge, relayer. Crimson Starless and Bible Black, Red, Larks tongue. ELP does Epitaph by K.C. on a live album. Soft Machine 2 or Third if you like keyboards. Tull thick as a brick, benefit.

Thorin, I would get the gong cd called YOU. There are some later Gong records that are nothing like the earlier stuff and could give a strange impression of the band. Stuff with no original members.

That's funny, I am seeing Yes in July too. 26th, to be exact. You know, favorite progressive rock band is a very difficult question.

This guy that i know said something really funny about Dream Theater. he said that they sounded "like an elp cover band with meat loaf singing" and i thought that was great because they do! The singer really annoys me. Their new album, that "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" is terrible. It might be the worst album since... well, I am not quite sure.

I might have to say Tool as a favorite progressive rock band, because while they may not be quite prog enough to be widely called "progressive rock" they get a whole lot more progressive with each album. At this rate, the album after next will be up there with Tales From Topographic Oceans in terms of grandiosity and progness, nad perhaps as enjoyable as "Animals". I may be the only person that thinks this, but Tales gets old after a while. Maybe sixty minutes would be good, but I don't know about eighty.

I don't totally know if they fall into the category of 'prog', but Sigur Ros are the band for me.

I think that they're more 'post rock' than anything else.

Cheers,

Mark

July 31, Yes. Mwa ha ha.

I would have to agree that Sigur Ros is probably more post rock.

Get 'Flying Teapot'. It's the start of the 'Radiognome invisible' trilogy, with 'Angels egg' and 'You'.

Don't get 'Flying Teapot' instead of 'YOU'. Get both or all three but definitely get YOU.
