Re: On the death of Tim Lopes, a brazilian journalist

Yeah, we're in serious trouble. People need to stop experiencing "life" on TV and start really experiencing it. People spout out 'facts' that they heard on TV like they were there as a living witness. People draw coclusions about life from a TV show! And the shows are completely unreal! Technology is striving to control the human brain and they know how to do it.

We definitely need more honest, brave journalists. You gotta be brave to tell the truth these days.

You know, I learnt how to manipulate people's answers in interviews in Media Studies, also learnt how to edit them so I only get what I want. Its a manipulative world we live in and they teach us in schools how to manipulate.

Cheers

Re: On the death of Tim Lopes, a brazilian journalist

Sydney--maybe this is another example, but I am not sure which refugee situation you're talking about.

Piper--we have had coverage of the India-Pakistan war in the U.S., but my concern is that the only reason for the coverage is because they have nuclear weapons (and thus the situation could become worldwide in the worst scenario). That's why I think it's very important that we communicate with "Roger"...so we learn not to think of it so selfishly (worry about what fallout might do in our country, etc.) and to realise what the soldiers are going through. Regarding the death of Mr. Lopes, I'd like to ask if you and cho.manno if you have any English news articles I can post to another message board of mine. If you do not, may I have your permission to use this one?

I wonder, do you think this is the kind of thing Amnesty International might have some material on?

Re: On the death of Tim Lopes, a brazilian journalist

FW, we don't get much coverage on the India and Pakistan issue down here. I was reading the newspaper the other day and noticed that nowhere in the front or back cover anything about that war could be found; but they had big headlines and pictures on the World Cup. But you're correct, it's probably getting more coverage in the US because you could suffer the consequences of a nuclear attack, not because the media really cares about what happens in the other side of the world. Unfortunately...

Anyway, here are some links to news and reports on the death of Tim Lopes:If you want to use our message, that's fine with me. cho.manno?

Re: On the death of Tim Lopes, a brazilian journalist

Thank you--I'll go through these articles.

The World Cup, BTW, didn't start getting much coverage here until the U.S. beat Mexico, but I don't think it's getting coverage to quite the extent it is in Brazil (my guess, anyway).

Although I think there ARE many Americans who care about what happens around the world (we get accused of a sort of uniform closedmindedness to a rather frightening extent!), I think the media caters to the lowest common denominator, if you're familiar with that expression.

All my local news stations show is un-newsworthy crap. I didn't hear about this until now. It's really a shame.

Please don't get me wrong. I know a lot of americans DO care about what happens around the world. I've lived in the US for a year with an american family and had plenty of american friends, so I know that for a fact. Unfortunately, a whole country is misjudged by their lowest common denominator, as you said. And of course the media makes it all worse. For instance, a lot of people still think Buenos Aires is the capital of Brazil (for those who didn't know, it's actually Brasilia, Buenos Aires is Argentina's capital ), and imagine that all brazilians love soccer, that we live next door to the rain forest and dance samba all day long with beautiful semi-naked women around. Nothing farther from the truth, just like saying that americans don't care for the rest of the world. All because of the media and the way they picture certain countries... "Sad but true", to quote Metallica.

Re: On the death of Tim Lopes, a brazilian journalist

Piper, maybe I shouldn't have voiced that particular complaint in this thread. I think you're the kind of individual who sees PAST media images to the real people.

I've just been having to see a lot of garbage tossed at my country--I don't know...I just don't like bad vibes. It's almost as though I can't shield myself against it like most people do.

BTW--on the capital of Brazil thing, at least I had the right country...I always assumed (wrongly) that it was Rio de Janeiro.

And thank you both for your permission.

Re: On the death of Tim Lopes, a brazilian journalist

Since I was educated before the US public school system was totally ruined by the Teacher's Union, I knew that Brasilia was the capital. I always thought that was an amazing story how they just went into the interior, picked a spot, planned the layout, and built a city from scratch, all at once. Bang.
P.S. I've always wanted to see Rio.

Re: On the death of Tim Lopes, a brazilian journalist

In my case, I'm not sure if it's so much an issue with the schools as a case of limited aptitude for rote memorisation. I have trouble with U.S. state capitals, too, even though I could learn them long enough to be tested on it.

Re: On the death of Tim Lopes, a brazilian journalist

FWr I was talking avout the refugee crisis here, where we have illegal immigrants constantly landing on our shores. We then put them in detention centres and then the goverment decides to take 2-3 yrs to process their refugee applications which are then rebuffed anyway so they keep these people in detention centres to send them back to their war torn countries.Trsut me these centres are not one bit of fun, suicide rates are high and ppl are miserable but they do not sew their lips together as the government likes to tell it.

cheers

Re: On the death of Tim Lopes, a brazilian journalist

No offence to you or your country, but that's not a very honourable thing for your government to do, to make things up like that!
