Floyd influenced tracks? It's cool with regards to leaving out 7/10ths of 'OK computer', as that comes across as just a little bit too obvious. I thought that this thread would be good for facilitating a little broadening of the musical spectrum in all of us, whilst still kinda adhering to a (Floyd) theme. You know? Anyway, my 2 cents would be; 'J'ai dormi sous l'eau' by Air, which, for me at least, harks back to The Golden Period- corn fields, summer days, timeless hours, a higher degree of kelvin. It's on the 'Premiers Symptomes' Ep. 'The fear' by Travis, which has to have the most Barrett influenced sound on a mainstream album in the last decade, coupled with that fade off at the end... From 'The Man Who' Lp. Most of us have file sharing clients like AudioGalaxy or iMesh, so I'd recommend downloading these tracks and seeing what you think. If this thread could maintain it's original purpose and not descend into The Usual Nonsense then that would be great. Take care, Mark

A rather unknown Floyd-influenced band is Anathema. I've heard they started out as some kind of Gothic metal band, but I don't know their first albums. Anyway, later they got more melodic. If you have the chance you should listen to their album "Eternity", which is the best of the four I know. By the way, it has got a cover version of "Hope" by David Gilmour and Roy Harper. The subsequent albums grew more and more repetitive and like average rockpop. But Eternity is truely wonderful and nothing like that!

Good work Fixxy...nice to see something I haven't commented on before. I'm surprised you didn't mention Sigur Ros though. For my part, I would say the only group I listen to that seems very Floyd INFLUENCED (there are a few that SOUND like floyd, but I don't think they're influenced necessarily), is the British band Doves. Some of their tunes seem to have resonances in Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and they actually acknowledge the Velvet Underground. Lots of accoustic stuff...a few harmonica solos (I have a bit of a soft spot for a good harmonica solo ya know!!!) and generally a very nice, melodic style. Wish they'd hurry up and do another album ('cause Floyd aren't likely to any time soon...or ever).

There are two acts I've heard recently that make me think of Floyd, though I can't say that they *are* Floyd-influenced - perhaps someone here might know? They are: Pulp The Soundtrack of Our Lives (please correct the name if I've got it wrong - a friend played it for me recently after a very, very long night...) And I agree with the assessment of Air's work - that same friend played me a few of their albums and I got that vibe many times. Cheers! GeeDub#1

Anyone heard the new Oasis single? Floyd influences all over it, from the opening piano chords (very Great Gig) to the repeating fading backing vocals (straight off Animals). Hardly surprising - Noel's spent the last 10 years mining the Beatles, and has now turned to the Floyd, and did admit to loving The Wall on a recent Channel 4 Prog Rock Top 10.

The elements you mentioned about Oasis' latest single (I think it's called Stop Crying Your Heart Out) are indeed there, but I personally found them to bear a lot more resemblances to the Phil Spector-produced Lennon than to PF... think about the main vocal melody, doesn't it sound a lot like Happy Xmas (War is over)? I also think they got something off U2's Walk On, which actually contains a strongly PF-influenced finale , a lot in the style of Eclipse (with each sentence beginning with "All that" !!!). So there is a connection with the Floyd, but via U2 (I know it's weird, but it's a nice theory, and sounds interestingly close to what the truth could be). Other than Walk On, there are of course loads of songs that sound Floyd-influenced, and Air is always in mind. Specifically, I was thinking about How Does It Make You Feel, I think they really wanted to record a PF tribute with that one! Another track that bears a very explicit PF influence is a rather new song by the band Archive. The track is called Again, and other than being a very Floyd-sounding piece, is also a brilliant song, IMHO. If you'd like to downoad it, may I suggest you to avoid the shortened single version that ends at about 4 minutes and go instead for the long, album version which lasts for more than 16 minutes. Great song. Last edited by Which One's Pink; 06-17-2002 at 09:38 PM.
