can't say i have any piercings...i figure i have as many holes as necessary, and though i have a high threshold of pain, i try to avoid it as much as possible...then again, I've got no problem with them on other people, particularly (attractive) women with belly button rings...which I find very enticing for some reason or another.

Ive totally gone off getting anything pierced. In an exciting physics lesson the girl nxt to me told me how she changed her belly button ring and couldnt get the new one in. She got it through the 1st hole but couldnt get it back out the other. This lead to bleeding.

And then she realised that one of her ear holes had closed up, so she decided to make it open again. It bled.

I remember after my first "civilian" stint in London, appearing before an aunt (the subject of my sole Poems & Other Essays post) with both ears pierced, and being asked why I'd done it.

As always with being the awkward type, I countered with my own question, the same to her, to which she replied, "Because I'm a girl." Oh foolish elder, lobbing them in for me to blast out of the ballpark.

"No," says I, "that's utterly sexist and if we're to support equality of the sexes, you'll have to do better than that. Why do girls then, have pierced ears?"

"For decoration, I guess," quips Auntie.
"BINGO! There's your answer," I finished.

Thinking of this exchange made me curious to know what's behind comtemporary humankind decorating themselves with tattoos (I have a rose-entwined cross on my forearm), piercings and other gougings. :o
