The plots aren't there just as a vehicle for one-liners. They are there just to entertain the same way an action movie might. You want to see what happens to the characters, but no there is no nobler purpose its just that the comic elements don't dominate either, the main thrust isn't just comedy. IMO.

Well ideally, that's what every story does-- there's a plot arc that satisfies the audience through a final resolution. That doesn't mean the movies aren't just there for the sake of comedy, though.

Well if comedy is the main aim then the plot is more a vehicle for the lines, and its the jokes the audience are more likely to be waiting for, not whether Arthur will find the holy grail or whether the aeroplane will land safely. In Guy Ritchies movies, the comic elements are just as important as the plot rather than one being more important than the other.

'Friends' is a popular sitcom (sitcom deriving from 'situation' + 'comedy'). Are you going to tell me that A) 'Friends' is not a comedy, or B) no one cares what happens to the characters?

I'm saying that by your definition (or how I've interpreted it) a film is basically a comedy if the jokes are more important than the plot (correct me if I'm wrong). I was just suggesting that with that definition it would be hard to classify Guy Ritchies movies as comedies (IMO). With Friends personally I would call it a comedy because I think the jokes are more important than the plot, but this is subjective, a lot of people watch Friends because they really care about the plot. I don't think you can really lay down a strict rule for what is comic or what isn't because it depends what any one person finds funny.

I think it can be concluded that 'Friends' is a steaming pile of dog poo. Has anyone here seen 'Dirty Work' starring Norm Macdonald?

And no I don't give a rip about 'Friends' either, but the argument stands.

Almost anything that makes me laugh. There are some quality movies in Hindi and Tamil that I can watch a million times and still cry from laughing so much. I know every line from those movies. I really haven't watched many English comedies. Well, not counting Frasier, Friends, ELRaymond, Seinfeld (But these are sitcoms, I suppose).
