Re: Who likes the Who?

I believe the Who did it first but there was an argument at Montery about who would follow who between Hendrix and the Who because they both wanted to outdo each other. I have heard Townshend himself describe this event so it is not just a rumor. Hendrix seems to have won that round by setting his guitar on fire and upstaging the Who.

Re: Who likes the Who?

yeah, that's true. Neither wanted to follow each other The Who ended up going first, but Jimi warned he would pull out 'all the stops' if he followed up...and of course, he stole the show. Pete just went out there and strummed compared to Jimi.

Re: Who likes the Who?

A semi-interesting sidebar to that story:
Hendrix later gave that guitar (that he set on fire at Monterey) to Frank Zappa. Frank later gave it to Dweezil, who put on a new neck, hardware, etc. and was trying to sell it on his website a couple of months ago for a million bucks! He may have gotten that out of a collector if he had left it as it was.

Check it out:
http://www.zappa.com/dweezil/hendrix_gtr.html

As you can see, Frank replaced everything to make it playable again, but Dweez changed it yet again.

Back to the topic, I'm going to buy the Who's Next CD.

Re: Who likes the Who?

If I'm lucky and can scrap up the cash, I'm planning on seeing The Who in August, with none other than Robert Plant opening for them (Ah!) I'd have to say Live at Leeds is the best (live albums are always the best) with Who's Next a close 2nd (Baba O'Reilly is genius). I'm definetely more of a Townshend fan...I actually always thought Roger Daltrey sucked. Anyway, that's my two cents.

Re: Who likes the Who?

strat: nice

echo: very nice

I liked Roger back when he was half decent looking with a shirt off and could sing. Now he looks like some sort of demented elf..prancing around and the rest of the band trying to avoid acknowledging his presence.

Re: Who likes the Who?

It's my fault. I bought "Who's Next" today. I guess John was next.

Re: Who likes the Who?

That's got to suck. You're Pete Townshend, you're all hyped up to go fly to Las Vegas and play a show... and your bassist dies. That's got to be the ultimate bummer.

Anyway, John Entwistle was a cool guy (from what I've read), and I think he will be missed. I will miss him.

Re: Who likes the Who?

Seems I heard once that he was really a nice guy. And that his personality was quiet and reserved... Kind of an opposite to Keith Moon (esp) and the others. Too bad. Much too young to die.

Stratman, you'll probably always remember the day you bought Who's Next.
