Re: whats DSOTM all about?

SSP,

I DID say "PLEASE," what more do you want?

May I kindly suggest you go out, or get someone else to go out and buy the Pink Floyd Encyclopedia to answer many of your more trivial PF queries. Instead of speculating or relying on our feeble memories or faulty perspectives, you can find out for sure what's what.

It's not a definitive tome, nor probably totally accurate, but until such reveals itself, it's the best one can currently get.

"Just thought you'd like to know."

Re: whats DSOTM all about?

IMO the songs go like this

Breathe = Just living your life in general, and making sure you live life to the fullest.

On the Run = Is about how people are always to busy with business and not enjoying life.

Time = Times about how people worry about Time and making dead lines. And how after enough "time" you die

Great Gig is about death or coarse

Money is about how people worry about money and think that that is what lifes all about.

Us and Them is a song that deals with worrying about being accepted by others. Fear of being different

Any Color you Life is about choices you make in life

Brain Damage is about the effects of drugs

Eclipse is just a summery of life. and when everything in life is perfect and good, there is still something that is not right. "everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon"

[i]Anyway, what does the title of this album mean? The dark side of the moon is not mentioned in this album, what's special about it and not the bright side of the moon? [/b]

Dazed, you are confused. At the very end of the album a voice mentions the dark side of the moon. He says there isn't one. I'm suprised noone else told you. It is just a cool name. The lyrics ARE what the album is about. The words are very clear. The Final Cut is much more vague. Any color you like is just that. Floyd is saying, heres an instrumental, it's any color you like. Whatever you get out of it is what it is. How can anyone explain the song Money better than the song itself? See what I mean?

"There is no darkside of the Moon
As a matter of fact it's all dark."

Re: whats DSOTM all about?

Just had an idea: At the end of Eclipse the last line is "But the sun is eclipsed by the moon", and then the final spoken line is "no dark side of the moon really.... matter of fact it's all dark".

Well when the sun is eclipsed by the moon we are talking about a Solar eclipse. So the moon is in between us and the sun, and the sun side will obviously be bright while our side is dark.
In a lunar eclipse we eclipse the moon, so the moon is on the other side of us and ALL of it is dark. It seems like this is the sort of eclipse being talked about by the mad old man, if Pink Floyd actually meant for that final line to actually mean anything in context with final line of Eclipse.
So either Pink Floyd didn't know much about eclipses or i am completely wrong and they had a different idea of what the last line meant, or i am completely wrong and there is no meaning to the last line. Take your pick.

haha D&C 1:0 PF

Re: whats DSOTM all about?

Here's my pick:

The line "there is no darkside..." was an answer to some question on a card that someone said into a mic and it fit well with the last song, Eclipse, so they threw it on. I just thought it was typical Waters pessimism and sarcasm when he says everything under the sun is in tune but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

Re: whats DSOTM all about?

See, Shawn (Play) there's a certain thing you do in situations like this when you're new and the regulars yell at you for things like this. It's hard, I know. But put yourself in their shoes...you're younger, you know less, and this kind of stuff happens ever damn week to them and they get frustrated having to tell people the same thing over and over. So here's what you do...

Wait until some poor sap asks what you want to know. Let him take the heat for it, and sit back with your newly gained knowlage.

That's what I did.

Re: whats DSOTM all about?

"And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of The Moon".

The occult lunar hemisphere is indeed mentioned within the lyrics and not simply confined to the Jerry Driscoll sample in the album's final moments.

Incidentally, the full quote that he'd originally suggested was:

"There is no dark side of The Moon. As a matter of fact, it's all dark. It's just the sun that makes it look like that".

I get the impression that, although it is rather unweildy, there was maybe just a touch too much pessimism, even for 'The Gloomiest Men In Rock'.

Cheers,

Mark

Re: whats DSOTM all about?

D&C: in your dreams buddy.

Maybe the issue was much greater in significance at the time since when Apollo astronauts were travelling to the moon, as they passed behind it out of radio contact, those were typically the most nerve-wracking moments.

And anyway, anything we cannot see is usually imbued with mysterious significance, so the Dark Side is naturally the mysterious one.

ROTFLMAO FBKness

That was a very good belly laugh for me. FBKness, I shall nominate you for the Best Newbie Post Award and recommend Paulo put your very wise words along the duplicate post warning on the registration screen.

Sweet!

Re: whats DSOTM all about?

I always thought the line "everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon" was another variation of the Rock-paper-scissors theory where everytime you think you got it all figured out, something will come along and kick your ass.

Actually, the album's FINAL moments consist of Supertramp dubbed over heartbeats by an incompetent hippie MFSL employee. But that's another matter.

BTW, this is my 100th post... ah, it was not that long ago when I was asking dumbass newbie questions. Yes indeed.
