What the hell are you talking about?

"Punk" isn't even popular right now. What pop punk was a few years ago is now emo/screamo/hardcore, and some of it sucks but it's a bit of a step up.

And as for Coldplay, I agree that they're getting repetitive but I saw them in concert and it reminded me why I liked them so much to begin with. Most of the stuff from X&Y is just rehashed, older coldplay songs, or rehashed old U2 songs. However, they are talented, and new, and pretty good. Hence why they're on my list.

The ONE thing that I cannot absolutely stand in music today is all of these metal/hardcore/emo/screamo/what-ever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-it f'n bands out there that have a frontman who just screams & growls.

Most of the time, the music sounds pretty good. But then some ass hole comes in and starts growling all kinds of stuff that you can't understand. It's b.s. ANYONE can scream & growl like an idiot, but it takes someone truly talented to be a real vocalist with a voice.

I'm just so fed up - oh my god I don't know what to do - I'm going crazy - stop the madness - stop the growling - I can't make sense of any of it - what can I do about it - I feel like rocking in the corner - in the dark - with no lights on - a sandwich in my hand - a cup of iced tea in the other - with a knit sweater on - without any pants - or underpants.

But seriously guys, stop the damn growling. Please. Just stop it.

YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT'S ALL OUR LOCAL SCENE IS!!! My band plays at some small clubs. I tell people we're like a mix of Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, The Mars Volta, and Muse. Too bad the audience we get is a bunch of fucking scenesters wearing girl pants with died black hair and "Underoath" t-shirts. Most of them leave before we play because they're precious local "hXc" band has already finished trashing the aura of an otherwise nice club.

I'm tellin' ya man, it's insane. There are some good hardcore bands (like the Refused) but the whole idea has been beaten to a bloody bloody pulp. Screaming isn't special anymore. It's almost taken the place of just plain SINGING. I've come up with some good climactic screams for our songs, but I've decided not to use them just to stay away from anything like what the local kids eat up.

Most of the people who like our music are college students or parents.

Re: Is it just me, or does most new music suck ass?

I think that the whole problem with music today and in the future stems from lack of freedom. I think that even some bands who make clearly commercial music perhaps have different tastes or would like to do something more innovative but the question is: do the record companies allow them this freedom? When we talk about big corporate companies (the ones who are powerful enough to get for their groups a massive airplay) I'm sure that the producers there have a lot of control over the final product and they won't allow anything "new", "creative" or "innovative" getting in the way of what they know will sell tons and tons of copies. It's all a question of money and business really, nothing to do with music itself.

This doesn't mean that there aren't new interesting bands but perhaps you have to look harder to find them as they normally record with independent smaller companies. And, what is more, sometimes one of these bands makes it through and gets a lot of recognition (like Sigur Ross) without being what you'd call "mainstream". There's still a bit of hope.

Re: Is it just me, or does most new music suck ass?

I don't know if I agree with that, a band, if they're smart about it, can get signed to a big label and have plenty of freedom at the same time. Look at things like Sigur Ros, Mars Volta, Le Tigre, Muse, Bloc Party etc, they're all signed to fairly major labels yet they're pushing the envelope. An intelligent label will understand that you need subversive bands that are pushing the envelope to sell records. An intelligent label will know that, it might not sell millions and millions to teenage girls like Britney does (and lets face it, teenage girls drive the market) but they also know that anyone with a deeper interest in music will explore and discover and buy.. and those people are still big players in the buying market.

As for screaming and hardcore. It actually takes a lot of vocal skill to scream/yell well withouth hurting one's voice and only being able to perform once a month, so I'm always pretty careful about saying that vocalists like that have no talent.
Emo is a load of shit, but hardcore is a different kettle of fish, and there are some good hardcore bands out there. Take The Locust for example. These guys are AMAZING, their latest album's been produced by Mike Patton, they have their own label, as well as being a part of Omar A Rodriguez Lopez's label, Gold Standard Labs, and they're signed to another one as well, forget the name of it now. They've sold a lot of records thus far (also forget how many) and are very subversive. Their albums go, on average, for about 15 minutes, most of the songs clocking in at about 40 seconds. Some might see it as pure noise (and it is a lot of noise) but it's interesting, and they're doing something different. Basically it's crazy stripped down guitar, insane drums, keyboards that sound like a 10 yr old kid has been set loose on them, and a death metal vocalist.. they're brilliant. So I'm not one to diss hardcore considering I really like a hardcore band or two..

EMO is pure evil.. and needs to wiped off the face of the planet to be replaced with postpunk bands like Bloc Party who are doing really interesting things on the "punk" scene..

cheers

Re: Is it just me, or does most new music suck ass?

Speaking of Sigur Ros, they actually changed their label for this last album.

Oh, and about screaming/growling: I agree that it's unnecessary, but I think it's something that can easily be overlooked if the music itself is top notch. The best example of this is Opeth...Mr. Akerfeldt has an astounding voice, but too often does he use the "cookie monster" vocals. I think he's starting to realize this, however, because there is a lot more "clean vocals" on the new album.

There's also Devin Townsend (who, imo, has one of the best voices of all time) who is sort of screamy in Strapping Young Lad. But he has a great range and makes good use of it, especially on his solo stuff.

Ok, if you can call that talent. It just sounds ridiculous to me.

If the music is good, well hell, just listen to it.

Sydney I agree that there's good hardcore (whatever that means) bands, but I don't think your local music scene looks anything like the one I described. It's enough to make you crazy.

Labels are for losers and music fascists, I don't give a shite what "label" a band has, if I like it I'll listen to it.
