Is it just me, or does most new music suck ass?

Yep !! Most of the "indie-music" is best canned /if its opened it only produces noise that too of weird kind.If its good music it won't stay there in garages and most of the bad music is "indie".

To me, almost all 'Indie' music just sounds the same. It's not so much independent(becuase it usually isn't, many 'Indie' bands are handsomely paid) as it is a bunch of bands trying their damndest to sound like what they think the Indie genre should sound like and to appeal to the highschool/college art person demographic. I respect the bands that make good music and have fun doing it but just don't have what it takes to go big, the kinds of bands that aren't signed to a major label or fat paid. The kinds of bands that draw a good sized crowd to a show because of good music and talented songwriting and not solely because they are called indie or emo or whatever. These are the bands that deserve to be rich, not the bands that jump in with their shitty telecasters and overused, two-dimensional, break-up lyrics. It could just be my opinion because I do hate high-pitched whiney sounding vocals that seem to be pre-packaged with most Indie bands, but they all sound like carbon copies of the last with no real depth or importance.

You're thinking of a different indie than I am.

For what it's worth, I have to say that I agree totally with the point of view that Indie is becoming more of a genre than a simple matter of being signed/unsigned. I think it's sad, but I also think that genre and label are secondary to the ability of music to speak to you or to be in some other way really worth hearing. I firmly believe that putting too much emphasis on where music comes from limits you way too much. I, for one, want to experience as much as possible musically, so I just disregard all of it.

Great post. For awhile I would gripe at people and say "INDIE ISN'T A GENRE!" but I quit caring and just enjoy the music for what it is: music!

A few days ago i accidentally turned on MTV. there it was - a Sean Paul video. if my hadn't been there, i wouldn't be here with all you nice people. it was dreadful. i nearly puked out all of my beloved organism. i really should be more careful.

Anything local you can recommend, Lej? Saw a band name o' Darth Vegas at the fringe last week. It has been about ten years since my mind was blown by new stuff, but that was great musical innovation. Kind of a cross breed of Zappa / Slipknot. Let's call it thrashy spaz rock. Come from Melbourne I think. Or Sydney.

I completely agree with you! I hate todays music so much that I cringe at the sound of it. I am in complete and utter infatuation with classic rock: Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Dr. Hook, Simon and Garfunkel, aerosmith, John Lennon and Journey. I love all classic rock!! In my opinion, rap should have never been invented. It sucks!! I've never heard a good rap song in my life. I hate today's music. It's pointless! All they sing about is cutting themselves and whining about how they can't find a girl or a guy. It's so fucking stupid!!

Here is my theory.. and its just a theory.

Today's music (or the music that i think we are criticizing here) is just dull. Dull in lyrics and rhythm. Recently, I took to listening to my girlfriend's Colombian music (Cumbias and Vallenatos). I loved it, because it was so different. I can't say the same for the majority of modern music.
The superstars of today are guaranteed a short life, because thats what the record company's want. So, they set out looking for artists with a catchy tune or can at least hold a tune, or look good without a shirt on, or have their boobs almost pop out, and promote the hell out of them for maybe 5 years, tops! Then they forget about them, and couldn't careless if we did the same. They are replaced with the next great thing.
If you like Pink Floyd, you are going to like bands that are spacey, or at least make you think. These types of bands are still out there and always will be. They will just have a tougher time of it, for the time being.
Is Rock n roll dying? No... just sleeping. It will have its day again. Everything seems to go in rotation.
For now I just sit in the car and go through radio stations while exclaiming "Crap, crap, crap, crap... Oh, I like these guys, I wish I could hear more of the likes of them!"
