Is it just me, or does most new music suck ass?

I can think of twenty bands that are better musically/lyrically than aerosmith, Journey, and John Lennon. I find Bob Dylan groundbreaking but not nearly as interesting as a modern rap group such as say, Outkast.

David Bowie did that whole Apollo 13 love song, but otherwise put out typical shite.

Clearly you've never heard, Station to Station, Low, Heroes, Lodger, Scary Monsters or you wouldn't say such things.
Pretty much everyone agrees that Heroes (the song) is one of the best ever made in the short history of rock music.

Even though this theory of "all new music is shit" has been countlessly proven wrong in the past several pages of this thread, I'm still going to tell you something you obviously don't want to hear.

There are bands around as good as, if not better than Pink Floyd.
We've all made lists, but listen to bands like The Mars Volta (de-loused is the better album) for spacey proggressive rock (a big more aggressive than the floyd, but just as trippy) or My Morning Jacket (I reccommend the new record, 'Z') for that classic rock sound with a new twist.

Also try the Arcade Fire. You might like the Walkmen too.

Can you please tell me what "today's music" you find so terrible? Yes, we've got our fair share of shit in the airwaves, but so did the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. Just weed through it and find the good stuff.

Everybody whines about girls. Everybody always has and they will continue to do so. If that's what you're feeling strongly about at the time of writing music than so what? Are feelings of love, or lost love less valid than political angst or social discontent? Not at all my friend, not at all.

Apart from Ziggy, my favourite was Aladdin Sane. I also liked Heroes but I thought the version of Heroes sung in german( Helden) sounded brilliant.

Walkmen played recently at a small club in Palo Alto called, "The Edge," I went to the show, it was awesome.

I do. For me this is one of the best vocal performances ever due to the passion that Bowie puts in it.

Uhh, that almost made me vomit. Can people give this Mars Volta pile of dung a rest already? As for comparing ANYONE to Pink Floyd, IT CANT BE DONE. They were the first, the best, the only, and always will be. Look, if you want to listen to new music, its fine by me, but Im tired of people trying to shove the same BS about new bands to me. I give almost everything a try, and I conclude to stick with older bands and musicians. But then Im some kind of closed-minded shallow idiot. I just dont like it!!!! And for people like you to assume others will like so and so if they like Pink Floyd is utter madness.

i think if you ask me rap is just about the dumbest music ever there are some good bands today i like which are "greenday" and "system of a down" but other than those there isnt much good music.Did you ever notice that muscicians today are just trying to get thereself attention by talking about rape and killing junk like that. Before there was music that meant something now it is just rapping so that the "talk" so fast you cant even understnad what there saying i wish rap would burn in hell

I saw him do that number on the Aladdin Sane tour in the early 70's, and it was absolutely fab. The chemistry between him and Ronson on stage was beautiful. I actually was fortunate enough to meet Woody Woodmansy ( not sure if that's spelled correctly) from the Spiders, many years later when he was in his own band 'U Boat'. A really nice guy, not big headed or anything. I told him how good the Spiders were all those years back. He got quite embarassed!

Have you not noticed a trend among the music that most (especially narrowminded like yourself) Floyd fans like? Assuming people might like other bands that exhibit similar qualities as the Floyd (i.e. psychedelic breakdowns and ambient noise that the Mars Volta have) is not as ridiculous as you make it out to be. In fact, there's an entire website (pandora.com) devoted to helping you find bands you might like based on bands you already like. It's not unusual in the least bit.

Pink Floyd is great, and yes they are the only Pink Floyd. But they're not the best band ever. There is no best band ever. It's all opinion, and that's fine if you don't like new music. Doesn't mean that all new music is shit like some of these fools are saying.

I am only trying to help people who haven't been exposed to some of the great music that's out there, because for the longest time I thought it was all shit too until some friends opened my eyes to the music that's there but just isn't very popular. Why you have to take an argumentative stance on music is beyond me, but you shouldn't be so rude.

And rap is not the only genre of music that's popular now. It's really not that hard to ignore. Get a clue man!

Just read the rest of this thread and you will find tons of bands that are very very talented and inspiring (even moreso than Green Day believe it or not! Although, I guess it's pretty hard to be more meaningful than "I don't wanna be an american idiot!")

Look, I dont mean to be rude to you. Its just I deal with it from people I know, and on forums like this all the time. I guess Im miffed at the generalizations everyone makes about Pink Floyd's style. It means different things to different people, and also, certain things stand out about the music more to some than to others. While in words, Mars Volta and other bands may be described similar to Pink Floyd, in reality, the music is SO different. As for the Pandora website, yes Ive tried it and its a nice thing really. I have definitely found some good stuff thats listenable....but again, it just isnt really like Floyd.

Pink Floyd the first, the best, and the only? Certainly not. In case you didn't know, their name happens to come from two jazz musicians they were influenced by. Early Pink Floyd also happens to sound quite a bit like most other 60's rock, no? Your quarrel is not with new music, my friend, it is with the stupid fads that come with all generations, emo and rap are not the only two genres around.

It isn't mine or THB's place to force you to listen to good new music, but hey, it's your loss.
