Pink Floyd the first, the best, and the only? Certainly not. In case you didn't know, their name happens to come from two jazz musicians they were influenced by. Early Pink Floyd also happens to sound quite a bit like most other 60's rock, no? Your quarrel is not with new music, my friend, it is with the stupid fads that come with all generations, emo and rap are not the only two genres around.

It isn't mine or THB's place to force you to listen to good new music, but hey, it's your loss.
Mmmhmm, yes and I suppose you are going to tell me what the "good new music" is. Look, I have forced myself to listen to a lot of new stuff...and little strikes me about it. Yes, the less-mainstream stuff too. I never said Pink Floyd was the only band I liked. I like lots of stuff like Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler (and the Dire Straits). But I think it is YOU who are closed-minded to assume that I am the odd one for not liking these new groups you rave over.

It means different things to different people, and also, certain things stand out about the music more to some than to others. While in words, Mars Volta and other bands may be described similar to Pink Floyd, in reality, the music is SO different. As for the Pandora website, yes Ive tried it and its a nice thing really. I have definitely found some good stuff thats listenable....but again, it just isnt really like Floyd.
Here's something you need to realize...

Pink Floyd is not the only good band ever. Just because a band isn't exactly like them or even NEAR the same style does not mean they're bad. What is so wrong with everyone showing you new bands? I love discovering new bands and genres that i've never heard before.

But hey man, listen to what you want. I'm just sharing my opinion and trying to help.

But if you keep this up, you will never see a good show ever again!
Just keep that in mind.

I used to think that there was no good music being made today (look at some of my early posts), but then I learned that I was wrong. I like the way rock music is going these days. It's different, but that doesn't mean it's inferior.
I recommend: Beside the obvious selections, Andrew Bird, Neutral Milk Hotel, Wilco etc.

Hi, would you really consider those 3 bands to be Rock? This is one problem I've had in search of new stuff over the last few years. Everything I've been checking out is either just soft, or some progressive metal. Is there not anything in-between....something with a CONTRAST of light melodies, and more intense stuff with an average rock-beat? Thanks

I don't know what you mean by "rock." I'd consider all the bands I've listed "Rock." But even better than that, they're damn good, too.

Re: Is it just me, or does most new music suck ass?

Can I just add my two cents here.

First, I disagree about Bowie, but that's neither here nor there.

Second, we are not trying to shove anything down anyone's throat. If you are not happy with new music, that is fine. But I hate the idea that you expect to come to this thread and rant about how much you hate rap or this band or that and not expect some fan of said music to come to its defense.

I personally think that Rock, as a genre, sucks. I can count the number of Rock groups I like on about three hands, whereas the number of bad ones seem to be infinite--and this is just not a recent thing, the number of bad bands has always outnumbered the good ones.

Ok, so I get that you don't like Rap. I happen to agree with you--for the most part. But there is some real good rap out there (I mentioned several bands/artists on this site already) with people who actually care about their craft of making music. (Don't even bother posting the reply--I know you don't consider Rap music). Hey, I don't particularly care for the regional folk music of southern Indiana, but you don't see me shouting from the rooftops about how much it sucks.

I have a variety of music tastes that range from Bluegrass to Pop to Classical to Rap. I know that Virgin Megastore has thousands (possibly millions) of CDs. If you can't find something you like that was made in the past ten years, I am sure they have something that you haven't heard before that you actually would enjoy.

My point: So you think new music sucks--big deal!! There are plenty of alternatives.

Re: Is it just me, or does most new music suck ass?

I hate to make this into a racial issue...but oh well. I just think of what the great talented black blues musicians around long before rap. What must they think of this wanna hump hump, pop a cap, roll a joint, crotch-grabbing nonsense. I have to say, for as much as they loved the idea of Civil Rights, I think this degenerate form of music is hurting their cause immensely...by showing such complete ignorance and lack of composure. Sure, the rappers themselves take in millions, but they are 1 in a billion. And dont give me the BS about a form of expression. Jimi Hendrix F'ing knew how to voice his political and racial views. What would he think of what blacks have done to music today? All blues musicians for that matter, who cared about the music and what it said....but more importantly understood the meaning of "musician". Rap/ Hip Hop, whatever you want to call it....it isnt music. Its hieroglyphics to a beat.
