| I believe one of the major components that today's music is missing is a unique sound...When I hear the first measure of Led Zepplin, Hendrix, Beatles, Stones, Doors and of course Floyd, you know who it is! (And this is just to mention a few) Today, I turn on the radio, and what I hear is a bunch of bands who sound the same...I couldn't name a single one of em...not saying all, but most. |

Understand, this is the fault of radio. Not a lack of unique musicians. The industry has learned alot about controlling the music since the 60's. The whole thing grew into a huge business in the 70's and if you think it was bad in '75 when floyd wrote Have A Cigar than you can imagine how much they have tightened the reins since. Radio is filtering everything more than ever. It all comes out the same. They are in the business of controlling power.

| They are in the business of selling what sells. Crap has always sold. Remember The Doors, often mentioned on this site as a fave, weren't big until after Morrison died. One of my fave Doors songs is L'America, but ask so many so-called Doors fans about it and they'll say, "Is that like Light My Fire?" My assumtion is that when theBeatles, Hendrix, etc, were all popular there was a bunch of hip twenty-somethings sitting around their favorite coffee shop talking about how much radio sucks. The point is, God only knows how many great bands there were during this time that werten't given a chance by the recording industry because they weren't Sonny and Cher, or Herman's Hermits. At least in this day and age different musicians have a chance, even if they don't get radio play.

Your wrong on this one NNJ. They are directing the people to what they want to sell them and burying everything else that they don't want to sell. They play a video 5 times a day for one band they agree with and pay people off to write bad reviews about a band they want to crush. They don't distribute or promote bands that don't fit their increasingly narrow standards. It's like selling mud after you have hidden or destroyed all the other good stuff. You make the kids believe that mud is all there is. 12-16 year olds are impressionable. Do you think taco bell is the best mexican food on the planet? It's not even mexican but it gets more business in a day than fine mexican restaurants across the street. Not because it's cheaper but because it's hyped to the kids through marketing. The chances are so much slimmer today to make a real living playing music it is pathetic. You must admit you don't know and trust me on this. The 60's were way different. The industry sprung up AROUND the musicians not vice versa. People today are playing to the industrys rules to try and get a shot at the big time sweepstakes. It is a whole other ball game! Research it, NNJ and you will find out amazing things that I can't get into here. I know what I am talking about on this one. The chili peppers could tell you alot about it! Flea knows! He is very talented but he would tell you luck ,ass kissing, relatives, who you sleep with is all just as important as talent. This industry didn't have rules yet in the early 60's. The music is also considered much more diverse from that era. There is a reason. BTW the Doors were huge in their day. Ask anyone who knows.

| First let me say, that my fav Doors songs would include "Soul Kitchen", "When the Music's Over",and "Rider's on the Storm"..... With that out of the way, I kind of Have to agree with Sarah. This was a whole different era..the 60's...I mean, look at how today's children thrashed Woodstock...Why they even tried to repeat this, I don't know...but the way those kids demolished the entire place was just horrible and embarrassing. Whatever is selling is what's playing. Now here is my theory for you... The Osbourne's...a big hit..MTV. I feel that sometime during or after the second season, mainstream might be heading back to the roots of Rock...It always takes, one band, or event to spark a nationwide sweep of interest, then the other bands of that genre follow. I believe that show might be it...Then, N-stink, back-boy-queers will be left in the dust just like New Kids..block....were. Now this could just be a fantasy of mine. If not, Ozzy will be leading the way, just like Nirvana did... |

| I have to COMPLETELY agree with sarah. I may add MTV's bad role in this situation. All you need in order to sell your CD is a nice ass, nice tits and a crappy cover of a song from the Sixties which teenagers think as a new one. This doesn't mean one will remain a "star" for a long time, obviously. Year after year we see new boybands, new chicks and new fake-rock bands, same voices with different faces. Very sad. Anyway record industry is killing itself because CDs are selling poorly these days... and things are getting even worse for them.

| First of all, The Doors were not huge, how many #1 songs did they have? They became huge because of the legend that was Morrison. I know, you watched the movie and saw the VH1 special, but trust me, on the charts, they were not that big. As for radio play, they had to edit one of their songs by about 7 minutes (if I remember correctly). Floyd's radio hits were all when Syd was there or re-released after the success of The Wall. (I'm sure someone is going to correct me on this, but let's face it The Wall and ABITWpt 2 was their most radio-freindly album.) I'm not saying that radio is better now, and yes you do need big tits to get air play. But the recording industry is more diverse than ever before, if no one is buying the albums, blame should lay on the consumer, not the industry. They are not out to entertain your ass, they are out to make money. And remember, there were horrible acts in the 60's and 70's. Sonny and Cher, Captain and Tennille, the Village People. Shall I go on?
