| By the way, I didn't eat Taco Bell until I was 21, and I think the food there is great.

| You miss one point, NNJ: you can release the most beautiful album in the world but if it gets NO airplay and NO advertising how can the "consumers" be aware of its existance and buy it? Today if you are not a very popular artist it's difficult to release an album. And you hardly have a second chance. A GREAT american artist like Tom Waits didn't release an album in 9 years because Island prefered to invest in pop music. He had to publish his albums with a small company (Anti records) in order to continue his career. And you know what? He SELLS. More than a lot of crappy pop so-called-artists. Even here in Italy his latest (BEAUTIFUL) albums entered the top ten. Because people isn't ALL stupid. A lot of people (even young people) love REAL, GOOD MUSIC. Obviously Tom is famous, he has a good number of die-hard fans, what a young musician cannot have. Record companies know absolutely NOTHING about music. True they want to make money, sure, but they fail very very often. And the crisis of the music market is the proof.

| I think you just proved my point. By the way, what about PHISH? Sell out shows, millionaires, etc, neer had any advertising or backing buy their label, just word of mouth.

| I don't think so. I've proved that they produce what they THINK they can easily sell. And what they can easily control obviously. And at the end of the day to save their ass from vaste loss of money they have to put out The Beatles' One, Pink Floyd's Echoes and so on. Because their teen idols don't sell enough.

| Listen to death metal. It doesn't get radioplay,it most certainly isn't the most popular music genre and you can never fail with it. But hey, even death metal has it's most horrid mainstream actions going on. This message should belong somewhere else...

Do you think that Pantera would have gotten signed in the 60s? I doubt it.

| The "off-topic" master strikes again! Pantera's "Cemetary Gates" is a pretty darn good song! Sorry...

| Well, if they sell so well, why ALL the majors keep dismissing people (and I'm not talking of artists but workers)??? And hey, you are right when you say that crap has always existed and will always exist, and I wasn't around to listen to the radio stations in the 60s but what can I say is that major radio networks today play all the same things, what major record companies tell them to play, that is. And believe me, I doubt Bob Dylan could release his first album today.

| Mad Yannis, I like the points you've made and agree. Not now John: I just wanted to state on my husbands behalf(who is a huge Doors fan)that the Doors were huge before Jim died. They managed to release 6 studio albums in a period of 4 years all of which went GOLD, which had never been done before. The Doors also had two No. 1 hits to include Light my Fire and Hello I Love you. The Doors demise was in fact due to Jim himself, but the music was incredible. The Doors live performances, (many of which my husband has on bootlegs) is the reason the Doors did not have more top hits. They were very controversial and the law, society, and politicians were aware of this and most certainly forbid airplay or performances of The Doors in many states and cities. Ahhh..just wanted to get that out... |

| NNJ: just back to something you said about the doors not being popular and that they didn't have a lot of #1's. well what about jimi hendrix? he was damn popular i would say and i believe he didn't have very many chart toppers. at least here in america.

| [QUOTE]Originally posted by Not Now John [B]As for radio play, they had to edit one of their songs by about 7 First of all, The Doors were not huge, how many #1 songs did they have? They became huge because of the legend that was Morrison. I know, you watched the movie and saw the VH1 special, but trust me, on the charts, they were not that big. minutes (if I remember correctly). NNJ!!! I did not watch the vh1 special and the Doors movie was not a good source for anything but Oliver Stones fantasy! The doors were one of the biggest bands in America! I know people who saw them live in LA as early as '65. They had number ones but they were an album group. They have grown over time, yes, but they were as big as any american act in their time. I am not trying to be smart. I AM passionate about this subject and I know what's up. The doors sold a hell of alot more than the grateful dead, zappa and others who became huge LATER. The Jefferson airplane was another american group that could rival the doors. Hendrix never had a number one. The doors reputation and myth has grown but they were one of the biggest draws in the world in the late 60's. Just do some real research(not vh1) or take my word. It's not that important anyway. I stand by my previous post in every way. I wish it wasn't true.

I hate to argue with you, friend. Pantera is a part of musical evolution and had they played that way in the 60's they would have been signed! It would have been revolutionary! They would have been so far ahead of their time noone would understand their music but they would call it genius due to their lack of understanding and sign them. They would have made black sabbath seem tame when sabbath came along in the 70's. Mad Yannis is correct and this is not opinion. Something did happen to the music biz and is still happening. Rock radio barely existed in the 60's. The industry grew up in the 60's. They did not have a huge system and FM didn't exist. Elvis was the beginning of rock radio and his music came BEFORE the radio format which was based on that type of music. NIRVANA came BEFORE the dreaded alternative rock stations. See? People CONFORMED to the alt. rock sound after bands like Nirvana created it. One real band=100 clones. Nirvana owed alot to punk, of course, and their sound. Like death metal, radio wouldn't touch real punk. Until someone makes radio friendly death metal which will just make you sick.
