Maybe not, but it takes golden ears for it to bother you enough to want to post online about it.

When I first complained about the downsampling problem with NIN's live CD in February, everyone thought I was crazy for the longest time.

Re: Followup to "question about Piper"

It was actually quite similar to this situation we have here. I made the complaint, everyone ignored me, and then after a few weeks people started paying attention and finally others started to hear it. Some people tried returning their CDs to the record company. They made another pressing, but it was just as bad as the first. Then I gave up and made my own mix using the live DVD's audio. It's twice as good as the "official" CD.

Re: Followup to "question about Piper"

Botley, will you explain 'downsampling'?

Thank you,

Shane.

Re: Followup to "question about Piper"

I'm still not sure exactly what happened... but somehow, in downsampling from the high-fidelity 24 bit 96 kHz DVD-quality audio they recorded and mixed at to CD-quality 16 bit 44.1 kHz level, they mangled the sound... there's lots of awful sibillance and distortion, like a bad mp3, on the live CD. It's really irritating once you start to notice it (which I did right off the bat).

If I'm not mistaking (and I guess not), the human brain cannot "hear" higher sounds than some 30 kHz. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Followup to "question about Piper"

You are quite correct. However, that's not what I'm talking about.

96 kHz refers to the sampling rate of the digital audio. That is, the signal consists of 96,000 samples of information per second (more than twice as many as on a CD). This has nothing to do with the frequency of the audio wave, which just also happens to be measured in Hz, but actually refers to the number of times per second a sound wave vibrates.

Comprende?

Re: Followup to "question about Piper"

Botley--I'd think that skip on "Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert" would drive you mad!

That made two different CD remasterings...the first time I noticed it, I freaked out and thought I'd scratched my CD. When I replaced it, the same skip was there, and I realised it was a recording flaw.

Re: Followup to "question about Piper"

I also hate the drum drop-in on One Of These Days, but that's another story.

Re: Followup to "question about Piper"

And the edit on Matilda Mother is pretty abrasive, too. But that's the best they could do then.
