People, if you really want us to check someone out, you're going to have to do more than list names.

Re: Music Recommendation Thread

I know Brainwashed has been saying this for years, but it's time I joined the ranks in saying:

Porcupine Tree! Simply incredible band, lots of layering of reasonably simple lines of music to make one awesome sound. I have listened to the three of their albums that I have (Deadwing, In Absentia and Lightbulb Sun) on repeat for the last ten days. Quite literally, for the last ten days, morning to evening in some cases.

Brilliant.

New album 'Fear of a Blank Planet' out mid April. Check out some of their earlier stuff too. 'Up the Downstair' is fantastic and if you buy the remastered digipack version you get the out of print 'Staircase Infinities' as the bonus disc. 'Stupid Dream' is great too. Basically I recommend EVERYTHING!

Re: Music Recommendation Thread

Probably a safe bet.

I'm very interested to see what the Deadwing film turns out like.

A friend of mine let me borrow In Absentia..it was really pretty good.

I'm trying to make a CD for my girlfriend of stuff that she's never heard before...could be old or new. She doesn't like really hard rock stuff so I'm hit up this thread trying to get some ideas.

By the way...there is an amazing band I recently discovered called Dredg if anyone is looking for a very talented but rather unknown band.

Re: Music Recommendation Thread

The new Frog Eyes album is very good, particularly the second-to-last track, "Bushels," is very over-the-top in a very wonderful way. Other good trakcs: "Idle Songs," "Stockades," "Reform Your Countryside."

Re: Music Recommendation Thread

Lately I've been trying to listen to some new acts since the most recent musicians I listen to date from the 90's...

I have really liked Pelican. It's a "metal" band with no vocalist and no guitar solos (even though they've got two guitar players). They play with the density and the punch of a metal band but they are more focused on the textures and the atmosphere. Quite of their songs last more than 10 minutes but in their last record ("City of Echoes") they have reduced the legth to 5 or 6 minutes. They often play in a major key so their music has got a soothing/uplifting quality. Really it's a bit like a metal rendition of Sigur Ross.

Another artist is Joan as Police Woman. I have only listened to one song, "Real Life", but I absolutely love it. You can listen to it online at her official website here.

I have also listened to The Long Blondes. I can listen to one or two songs and they're ok but when I tried to listen to the full album I found it to be quite boring and too derivative from Blondie's early years.

Agreed. I've been listening to these guys for a few years (seen them live 3 times, and actually seeing them twice next week). Most people consider them to be in that "post-rock" genre...if so, then they are undoubtably the best, imo.

Incidentally, I once saw them on a tour with dredg, who was also mentioned earlier in this thread. I would consider them to be one of the freshest and best contemporary bands out there. They only have three studio albums (each one a concept album; it's very album oriented music), each very unique. If you want to get your feet wet their newish live album "Live at the Filmore" is excellent (they are even better live than they are in the studio).

Being a big fan of both bands, anyone interested in learning more about either can shoot me a PM.
