Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

I am not argueing with you man, just commenting on your post.

I respect any musician regardless of how they chose to play and learn more about music.

The theory thing gets me because when I was younger I couldnt get my nose out of tablature books. Yep, I learned all the latest and greatest Metallica, Ozzy riffs but all I knew was numbers and where to put my fingers.

Ask me where a note was on the finger board and I couldnt tell you. Ask me to play Fade to Black front to back with solos and I would rip it out to a tee, note for note. Now, does that make sense not knowing the most basic principles of your guitar while at the same time being able to cover a song perfectly?

Its a shame because I was moving in slow motion. If I had started learning theary a little sooner I guarentee I would be much better today. What theory does is just broaden your horizons, makes you understand what your doing, when to do it and why something works and why something doesnt. Like I said, wether you chose to learn it or not its not fdebatable, you can only bennefit by learning even basic theory.

Now I am not saying this is you so dont take it the wrong way. But the people I have come accross that stick their nose up as far as theory goes has either been 1 of 2 types of people.

1. People that refuse to learn theory because they are too lazy.

2. People that dont understand theory so they knock it.

I consider myself a pretty decent guitarist but I am only now just breaking the ice of theory and its already started to pay off.

well #1, I am neither of those two types of people and #2 I do not sit around with my nose stuck in a tablature book... I have far more important things to do with my time, like writing my own songs rather than playing others.

well i like to learn things , so i can practice. if i don't know anything to play , then what would i play? of course i have my own tunes to , but i like to learn other people stuff so i can learn my own technique ,... plus i think its fun to do that...

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

Dreamscape,

You seem like your upset here. Again, I am not fighting with you and your opinion is your opinion.

The bottom line is with me that I dont see how you can argue with facts. The fact of the matter is that with basic music theory knowledge you will advance much faster than you would otherwise.

Theory is the #1 thing that anyone serious about music could know. Even knowing very little theory could go a long way. Its very obvious and I am not saying you that many people that play guitar just dont take the time to learn it. This is also why I think that other musicians such as classical artists dont even view guitar as a serious istrument. When you see 9 out of 10 guitarists walking around with bell bottoms on, nail polish and ratty hair it kind of paints a picture of all guitarists.

Go to Berkley and see how 90% of the people turn their heads up at guitarists. One, they are a dime a dozen and two most dont take the time to learn the basic need to knows about their instrument.

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

Dreamscape,

I would love to hear some of your recordings. Not because I dounbt yoy in any way. Rather because I always love hearing what other people are laying down for music.

Maybe I will do the same once my home PC is back up and running.

I never had doubts as to you as a player and I hope I didnt come off that way. My post was meant to be taken "in general" not to the individual.

Thanks,
Jason

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

I know a lot of good musicians like the Floyd. I play in a band in New Orleans, the other guitarist plays a SG & I play a strat - so we get a good guitar blend. Our keyboard player is always playing PF songs @ rehearsals. I used 2 sing & play "Another Brick In The Wall pt2" in another band.

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

Still quite new to guitar, although I'd say I'm picking up fast.
Started 2 years ago.
I've made this same post about twice on this forum so far, I believe.
Takamine G-series accoustic (cheeeeap, but with a good sound)
American Strat, hot rod red, white pick guard, maple neck. I believe there's a picture of it on the "Post Your Picture Thread."
Marshall Micro-Stack. It's tiny, but has great sound, and fills my dorm room (and all-wood bedroom back home) quite nicely. Soon I'll have 2 more micro stacks, another Marshall and a Hiwatt(!).
Korg AX1500g effects processor, Marshall Guv'nor 2 distortion (for sale!), and some danelectro minipedals (chorus and t-bone).
With my MIA Strat and this effects processor, I can get some suprisingly accurate Floyd tones as well, I'm just lacking in the amp department.

Hiwatt Dr103 full-stacked with Hiwatt cabinets. Mmm! Want!

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

Mmmm... Quite the collection, bud!

I thought you said you had an SG?
But nevertheless, very very nice!
That's my ideal Les Paul (if you throw in some 57' reissue humbuckers)

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

This thread is very old, the SG is long gone.

I have a 59 Reissue on order, I just want to be sure to get thebest top I can.

That is only a small part of my overall gear, I will try and get some updated pics.

My most recent guitar is a Ibanez RG3120 Prestige model. This is teh most versatile guitar I have ever owned, it gets awesome strat tones when you tap the buckers and everything else you can imagine.
