Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

Or any other musical instrument for that matter.

I figure quite a few Floyd fans must have an interest in playing musical instruments.

I always like to know on any forums who the guys are that share my interests with me. I am a guitar guy that is currently playing both a Gibson SG and Fender Strat through a Mesa Boogie half stack.

This rig with a strat gives me some very convincing Gilmour tones, well, nothing but a Strat would.

Well, have at it!

Jason

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

Hello there, OnTheWing!

I play guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums.

My current guitars include a black Fender acoustic-electric 12-string (great for getting the guitar sound at the beginning of Wish You Were Here), a beat-up Yamaha Eterna acoustic, and a brand NEW sunburst Fender Strat. In about two days, I am going to have a new arrival - a cream-white Squier Fat Tele, which I'm going to put a Bigsby vibrato on. It's going to be a fun little project.

That's cool that you've got an SG... I've always wanted one of those to mess around with.

Hey Shane,

Great stuff man, you will love that Squier. Over the years I have had anything from $80 guitars to $2,000 guitars. Somewhere in there I had a couple Squiers and let me tell you. For the money they cant be beat. You still get that Strat tone, sure, its no MIA strat but for the money its a steal.

Right now I have a MIM Strat that just plays so unbeleivable. You cant beat the all mable neck and finger board, to me taht makes a Strat.

Later,
Jason

I play keyboards and guitar (amateur--keyboards better than guitar).

I can't really afford very much in the way of equipment, but I enjoy myself, and that's enough.

I can punch the keys of a piano and make great experimental music if that matters...

Watch Pompeii. I bet you can do what Mr. Wright is doing on "Syncopated Pandemonium"!

That's also me - I like to experiment with sound.

I think I already posted about what experimentation I've done - look in the 'Best Song on Atom Heart Mother' thread... or is it 'drugs, yes or no?'... I forget - which I know isn't much, but it's something.

In my own music, I try to balance crafted instrumentals with sound experimentation. And I'm still working at it.

FloydWright: of course you don't need 4 guitars to enjoy yourself. Hope you don't feel out-of-place!
And do you write any of your own stuff, FWr? Just curious.

Hah. I TRY to write songs. TRY is the key word. Someday I might pull it off, though I do have some fragments I enjoy.

BTW, it was the AHM thread.

Well, I can't play decent piano with both hands, so ALL I do is experiment sounds and reverbs...

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

Well I can't say I have four guitars and all the trimmings.

I've had an accoustic steel (Yamaha) for about seven years. I write little songs and doodle around with some easier classics (WYWH, Mother, Comfy Numb, Imagine, Jealous Guy blah blah blah).

I've never taken a lesson so I should be a lot better for someone who's played for 7 years.

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

I don't have all the trimmings. I am about to get my second electric guitar, and I don't even own my own amplifier. I have to borrow my brother's, which isn't a bad situation, but having my own would be nice.

BTW, FloydWright, thanks for the clarification on the AHM thread.

You don't need to have had lessons to play well. i taught myself to play from tabs, i can read sheet music but i only use it for classical guitar which i do take lessons in.

Can vouch entirely for Driven's lyrical and performing prowess, having witnessed a rather impromptu exhibition of such.

Quite invigorating, it should be observed, yet possessed of a melancholia that was so obviously from the heart.

But, after all, that is what music's meant to be about.

Good one,

Mark

Re: Since I am new, who here plays guitar?

Alot of the innovators in rock and roll taught themselves. Didn't Gilmour and Syd? Not that lessons can't be extremely useful but the quickest way to your own style is finding your own way. There's only 12 proper notes. I think listening is the key. You figure out what works. Than you get to the notes in between the notes! Things can get out of hand. As Gilmour knows, what you don't play is just as important. Silence is the 13th note.
