Guitar God? Well, I don't think that a good guitarist is only that one that plays in the speed of light. DG composed, for me, the best guitar solos ever! The solo from "Time" still makes me go numb, even though I've already heard it a thousand times. And speaking of "numb", Comforatably Numb simply has no eartly conexion! What I mean is: Why isn't Gilmour recognized for his work? It isn't for lack of repercussion, because Pink Floyd is known world wide. I can't say if this is an interesting issue, but I'd like to discuss it.

Don't let it bother you, Seamus15. Dave gets plenty of respect in the guitar world. He has a fairly unique style, utilizes bends and effects more than anyone else I can think of. My best friend is a world-class guitar player; he can duplicate licks of Vinnie Moore, Yngwie, Satriani, Zakk Wylde, etc. But he cannot duplicate Dave's riffs. I asked him to do his version of Comfy Numb solo(I have the backing track) but he declined---said I wouldn't like it cause he couldn't do justice to it. He said it's just a different style of playing than he has learned. He said he had too much respect for Dave's trademark piece to make it sound like something else. Remember too that most guitar compilations thrown together like that CD you're talking about just pick a few mainstream players with the biggest names targeting the widest possible audience. It's no disgrace or disrespect that Dave isn't on it. Last edited by stratman; 07-13-2002 at 09:57 PM.

I heard he sings his solos then goes back and figures them out.

HM, I have to say that I've always had great respect for the man and his guitar playing, exactly for that unique style of his that just can't be reproduced. cheers

Keep in mind that the comf. numb solo was, as Gilmour said, 6 different takes mixed together. He explained how he learned it from the final mix of the song to play it live. He obviously improvised in concert but the general solo from the studio is still there. So he is playing 5 or 6 solos on different tracks and than fading them in and out at the best spots to sound like one continual solo. That makes it tough to duplicate.

And that also makes it some quick-as-hell mixing.

Yeah it is still very impressive. It's not a cheap gimmick or anything. The mixing alone takes a real creative person. To make it flow and everything.

Mixing is hard as hell. I haven't quite mastered the art of mixing from a four track, let alone a 24 track with echo returns and the whole bit.

Do you ever put 3 tracks onto one?

Gilmour is a guitar GOD, because of his phrasing and impeccably clean playing. I think the quote in my signature says it all.

That definitely must be the way he gets them! Like I wrote elsewhere, DG's solos never break the song. It's not like other guitar solos (even Stairway's main solo etc) , where you have a change like - "ok, the vocal's over, this is the guitar solo now.." ..Nope. DG's solos sound like they're singing the lyrics, echoing the feel of the song and you could (I can!) relate the solo to the song's theme so deeply! terminalfrost : i do like the quote in your sig! |
