Re: Why your soul is dead

I think that when physicists say that the universe is expanding, they mean the matter in the universe is spreading farther apart. I don't know much about astrophysics, so this is pretty much a guess, but seeing as space consists of nothing (re: vacuum), I would guess that by 'the universe' it is commonly meant the stars, galaxies, etc. that issued from the Big Bang. I don't think that any sort of cosmic event was necessary to create vacuum, seeing as it is, by definition, nothing-- so space isn't expanding, but the contents of it are.

Again, that's my uninformed guess. Shoot me in the head if I'm wrong.

Ahh...a Vacuum, I see. So that must be where square root of -1 (i) calls home.

No worries, guy/gal/thingy.

Remember to deposit a penny into a bank account to enable you to cover, through the miracle of compound interest, the astronomical bill you're likely to have from your "date".

Re: Why your soul is dead

It's all taken from the Douglas Adams book, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, part of his extra-tertiary Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Re: Why your soul is dead

Oh my, what can happen to a thread over night.

The idea that space (this vaccum) doesn't end is the most tripped out thing in the entire world to me. Its so hard for me to get that concpet around my head and I battle wit it on a regular basis.

I believe that everything is just matter but I also think that we need to believe in things to keep us going. Our belief that there is something greater than us is what gives us hope, so to say. This is really hard for me to explain so just bare with me. In our chemical make up, feelings etc (which by the way also are just caused by chemical reactions in our bodies, for example depression isn't a state of mind its a chemical imbalance, a lack of endorphins in the body) are what drive us in the big scheme of things. The power to communicate by words is what makes us that little bit different and thats the one thing that I can't explain in my own head and the one thing that I think is higher than us (the power to communicate) and even thoguh we seem to be losing touch with that power (wars and all tha bollocks are really unnecessary if we only tapped into our power to talk)
Now I think that our chemical make up requires us to believe in things higher than us such as god and althoguh I do not believe in god I do believe that our souls go on, that our spirits stick around (probably why I believe in ghosts and things of such). Reincarnation is a big one with me and if I was to be any religion I would be buddhist but thats a completely different story on its own (am not disciplined enough to actualy attempt being buddhist)
Now the thought of not believing in any of those things is too much for me to grasp and if I was to think that we were jsut pointless chunks of chemical matter I wouldn't be the person I am hence why I strongly think that everyone needs to believe in something if they are to survive in the great big world that is just chemical matter.

cheers
