i do like EVH, but John Petrucci is by far, faster, more skilled, technically aware, and can do things on a guitar that really are impossible!

But all said and done, Big Dave is still joint favourite, cos i like his sound. He doesn't have to sweep pick and tap his guitar at 6000bpm to get my vote. So you see i like all kinds of guitar styles. I think that is the TRUE element of this discussion. It is what YOU like to hear, and that is really what matters to oneself.

There are so many great guitarists out there, but only about 5 actually make me cream my jeans when i listen to them, but they might be very different to your 5.

rant over, and please be nice to each other!

I agree High Hopes, John Petrucci is an excellent guitarist. IMO, EVH comes no where near.

top 5 players

1)Without a doubt, influence, soloing, songwriting, ingenuity, talent and all of the things that make a good guitar player great.
The answer is Jimmy Page.He is guitar!!!Everyone else is second.
2)Dave Gilmour. All that I can say is listen to the solo in "Dogs".
Holy cow!Talk about original and inspired! He is simply amazing!
3)Keith Richards. Now that is some good guitar playnig and what a song book!Probably the best rhythm guitar player around.
4)Eric Clapton. What can be said about "slow-hand"?He is amazing!
5)George Harrison. It is pretty hard to stand out from the amazing songs that the Beatles wrote as a group, but somehow it is pretty hard to over-look George's playing.Just listen to the solo in "Octopus' Garden".
There it is.My list.I know that not everybody agrees but that is the beauty of music and opinion.Everybody's is different.

Dave Gilmour at number one for me, no question.
After seeing him at the Royal Festival Hall, Jeff Beck would be a fav.
Eric Clapton, Mike Oldfield (I think I mean him. The guy who did 'Moonlight Shadow'), And also a personal favourite, Ralph Mctell. A folk/blues finger-picking player, only ever plays on an accoustic, but damn is he good! I mean really good. .

i love your list... a very good one, especially sence you put Jimmy page at the top, and you also have George harrison on there... another reason why The Beatles are the best.
