Why Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist ever:

1)He played guitar AND sang lead(cough cough Page, Gilmour, Harrison). This is harder to do than it seems.

2)He wasn't PART of a band, he WAS the band. (cough cough *see above*). Led Zeppelin isn't JUST about Page, Floyd isn't all about Gilmour, Beatles weren't about Harrison, but the Jimi Hendrix Experience + Band Of Gypsys (his 2 bands) were centered around him. This means he had to write pretty much all of the songs, come up with the music, etc.

3)He has more style. Who cares who can go through the Pentatonic Scale fastest. If speed really mattered that much Yngwie Malmsteen would be a household name. I downloaded Stevie Ray Vaughans version of Voodoo Child on Kazaa yesterday, and I almost laughed. He half-asses all of the complicated solo's and riffs, and replaces them with some easy crap.

4)He achieved all of his greatness in 4 years. He had more hit songs than all of these guitarists put together. Voodoo Child, Purple Haze, Fire, All Along the Watchtower, Red House, Manic Depression, etc.

5)He was self-taught.

Yeah Hendrix was an excellent guitarist, if you like that sort of thing, but he never seemed to have that....Bring up the hairs on the back of your neck tone, Unlike Messrs:
Beck
Gilmour
Page
Clapton
Santana
Do Guitarists get better with age? i think so. Maybe Hendrix could have been better had he still been alive....

Jeff Beck gets my vote, what he cant do with a guitar isn't worth doing....

No particular order.

Gilmour,
Clapton,
Hendrix,
Harrison,
and Rhodes, who died before his number should have been up.

There should be more on this list. Five just isn't enough!

I agree that Hendrix is an excellent guitarist, but I really could never get into his music that much.

Not much depth to get into, just sort of a flaming ball of plasma-guitar energy to shock your brain.

Where the hell are you from again?! Wow! Beck, McLaughlin, BB King! I didn't know people listen to that stuff back home. I thought I was the only crazy guy!

Hey, you heard of a band called "Thermal And A Quarter?" They opened for Deep Purple when they came to B'lore. If you haven't, I highly recommend them.
