That is a great piece to select. The word "episode" describes it perfectly.

Re: Best song on "The Wall"

This may or may not have already been addressed, but this again is an opportune time to advise about considering the context of things before passing judgement.

Roger Waters, remember, is an Englishman who grew up during and after the second world war.

Vera Lynn was the nation's songbird and darling and, having sung the seriously encouraging and uplifting hit of the time, "We'll Meet Again" places her very much squarely in the hearts of every Briton struggling through that war. This song came out at a time when Britons regularly engaged in one of their favourite pasttimes: the sing-song sing-along. They used Vera and her song as a focal point of patriotic attention and dedication to the war effort, and thus she remains an historically important figure to those who can remember her and her song.

It was obviously a poignant song for Roger as he would forever be unable to meet again his lost father. So, "Vera, Vera, what has become of you?" has a bit more meaning for someone like Roger, and is a perfect prologue to "Bring the Boys Back Home."

Musically, it may be one of the weaker tracks on this double album but it has some gravity attached to it which should not be overlooked or ignored.

"So long and thanks for all the fish."

Wow, that concert was over 18 months ago, now... how time flies.

Indeed! It all came into focus at Roger's Dark Side shows -- the subtextual "forces radio" prologue, in particular, set up the big finale's payoff very nicely. Methinks this is something that would be difficult to capture in a live DVD filmed at the shows, although it would be a nice memento.

Re: Best song on "The Wall"

I have my favorite versions of songs from TW which are scattered among different releases. I actually prefer nobody's home and run like like hell from Roger's "Live in Berlin" and comfortably numb from DSoT w/ it's climatic gtr solo + the original studio cuts of goodbye blue sky and hey you

When I want to hear the whole work I listen to ITAOT CD.

I love the album as a whole and really generally listen to it from beginning to end like Darkside of the Moon. I really enjoy the Is There Anybody Listening? CD and listening to that from beginning to end.

Hey You by Pink Floyd

"Hey you, don't tell me there's no hope at all
Together we stand, divided we fall."

Battle cry for the oppressed throughout the fabric of time. One of the great songs for me.

Speaking of Vera, it appears there is a new contender for the "nation's songbird/darling" title.

Hmmm...if Simon Cowell can be kept out of it, this young lady may have a chance.

For all of El Cowell's undeserved influence in pop music circles these days, I predict a long awaited backlash to his talentless talent-scouting/exploiting format is about to be realised.

There are quite a few tributes coming out over here - from priests to soldiers to neo-Veras - in support of our boys and girls fighting and dying overseas, and I guess it was only a matter of time before Simon the C-word got his claws into it.

Re: Best song on "The Wall"

I did not hear her music but the young girl is very pretty.

Today is the day for great art to be created and appreciated with all the new turmoil. I can recall a constant look back to the 60's thinking it was some sort of great time, but now this generation has gotten into its own muck of confusion and panic as we approach the Age of Awareness. This is the time for music!

Wow. Can you choose just one? If I HAD to, it would be Comfortably Numb. Second would be Nobody Home. Third would be Mother.

Re: Best song on "The Wall"

Most of it has been played out by classic rock radio IMO. With that said I have to give Comfortably Numb the obvious nod. Although Mother is really a great song that is not as played out as some of the others.

Re: Best song on "The Wall"

Just three hours ago we were having supper with my grandson who is home on Christmas leave from the Marine Corps. He was telling me that although Wish You Were Here is his absolute favorite album in the world, he watches The Wall movie often.

That made me smile.

When he and his sister were little kids over at my house we used to watch The Wall together while I was tending them. (I discreetly fast-forwarded through the questionable bits, assuring their mother that they saw nothing disturbing) Their favorite parts were the marching hammers and the "Empty Spaces - What shall we do now?" animation -- with special focus on the screaming face in the wall -- which they insisted had to be played over and over.

My work here is done.
