Re: The Great 7 bands

Well, I would have put Queen instead of Van Halen in this list of 7. Anyway I think that the main problem that a lot of people have with Van Halen is that they are very commercial and that they opened the doors to all the hairy bands that were in part responsible for making the 80's sound so horrible. But in Van Halen there are 4 VERY skillful musicians (not only the guitar player) and if you can see beyond commercial values, some of their songs are very well crafted. I would go for Van Halen any day rather than listening to such cult bands as The Velvet Underground, THAT's what I call an overrated band.

I voted for the Stones. They have been a living corpse since 1973.

On a side note, Steve Hackett from Genesis was playing tapping before Eddie Van Halen even learned to play the guitar.

Meh, I really don't care what bands are overated, personally I think watever you like to listen to is what you listen to, who cares if it's overated? So, I vote nothing.

The stones, just because they have the highest suck ratio, let me explain

Hype (divided by) music

Re: The Great 7 bands

Did anyone else not read the question correctly and choose Pink Floyd...

If I would of read it with due care and attention I would of voted for The Doors... Van Halen are worse but The Doors annoy me more.

I don't know why people think the Beatles are overrated, they made plenty of inavations and took great musical risks (Revolution 9, Tomorrow Never Knows etc) They had the very first ever concept album with Sgt. Peppers. And there is a lot of varity on there albums from Paul McCartneys Pop hits, George Harrison's Indian themed tunes and John Lennon's political songs so you don't get bored unlike pink floyd who for the most part take themselves waaaaaay to seriously.

Re: The Great 7 bands

I understand that one thing is the Beatles and the other is their myth and all the Beatlemania craze. You can get VERY tired of all the people who absolutely worship the Beatles and their almost untouchable status as best pop band ever. But if you listen to the albums (from Revolver onwards) you'll get quite a good share of excellent music and ideas and a lot of variety as Cup says. And even before Revolver there are also some interesting things like the riff in "Day Tripper".

BTW, I don't know if "Pet Sounds" can be considered a concept album or not but it was recorded before Sergeant Peppers and it certainly influenced the Beatles work in large amounts as Macca has already said hundreds of times.

lol, I do live in Liverpool (Toxteth/Huyton) thank you very much :P

I can see what you mean by "having them in your face" but I really don't mind myself, probably because I like them :P But it can not be denied that the beatles made plenty of catchy, intreasting and innovashs (sp?) music. They're just an all round enjoyible band and it gets to me when people put them down because of there early years which are crap but rubber soul and onwards is all fantastic.

Meh, Diffrent Strokes for diffrent folks.

Re: The Great 7 bands

well i think i voted "Van halen". I love those 7 bands, but there are bands more or equal representative as Van halen. what about Black Sabbath, Deep Purple or Jimi Hendrix? Nowadays we have U2 too (that sounded weird).
But i think whatever you hear, as long as you like it, its great
