Sure. And I could add that Battisti deserved it (for his music if not for Mogol's lyrics) but I was talking about a worldwide massive success, not just "good" "somewhere". However as I remarked that's not the main point.

Re: The Great 7 bands

My point (via sarcasm) was that the Beatles' 1 came out near the end of the year (whichever year that was) and it outsold *Nsync's new album, out the same year (I believe). For a re-release of a bunch of 30-year old songs, that's pretty damn good. Ergo, I protest the 'not timeless' idea.

I agree, they could be old and surpassed but they're a piece of history, no matter if you like them or not.

(and it would have been pretty damn sad if they didn't outsold Nsync)

Thanks for pointing that out. That was something I had wondered about. I checked it out, and you are right...the book said that Ringo had left the group for 9 or 10 days during the recording of the White Album (hinting that Yoko was getting on his nerves).

[The Long Tangent: It really was a soap opera kind of band, I suppose, but that was due more to the mass media attention they received (hype), and the public's perception of them being 'rock stars'. Individually, That was just the kind of attention that Harrison seemed to try to avoid, while Lennon would fuel the fire by being as controversial as possible. Despite all the hype, they were all dedicated, if not driven by their profession, and it showed in the diverse music they produced.]

Anyway, any idea which songs McCartney played drums on?

The Ballad of John and Yoko was one, I think.

Cheers!

Re: The Great 7 bands

I didn't vote, just, because. I can't say I care for the Doors all that much. It still pains me to see the Beatles as overrated. Innovation was their key, in my opinion. At the time, they were doing some far out stuff. Van Halen I never much got into. I just like The Who, a lot. Pink Floyd? *shrug*

As to whether they're overrated or not, who knows.

And Queen is a good band.

Re: The Great 7 bands

The only song that made it to the White Album with Paul on drums was Back in the U.S.S.R.
Additionally, Paul also played drums on Martha My Dear. Ringo was around, but obviously he was needed elsewhere at the time.
And GW#1 is right, he also played the drums on The Ballad of John and Yoko. This was in 1969, however, not during Ringo's momentary leave.
Actually, John and Paul played everything on that song, and completed it in a single day. This is interesting, considering the way their relationahip was going by 1969.

Re: The Great 7 bands

Why is it that if I say the I don't like the Beatles, someone else says go listen to Vanilla Ice. I don't like PULSE and I am compared to Brittany fans. No tolerance here I see.

Really, I think of Vanilla Ice as the rap version of the Beatles. Not really good but he broke the mold of what rap should have been and allowed others to build on it.

And that is all that the Beatles were, just a bunch of kids who changed popular music, but really, they were not as good as people say they are. OK, there are a handful of good songs, but the ratio must be 100:1.

Re: The Great 7 bands

Why? You can use sarcasm, I can too.
If you think Beatles are crap, welcome, it's your right, but you cannot expect most of the people agree with you.

Here's a little, essential list of so-called crap:

Strawberry Fields Forever
A Day In The Life
Let It Be
The Fool On The Hill
With A Little Help From My Friends
Eleanor Rigby
Yesterday
Hey Jude
Girl
Michelle
Penny Lane
Come Together
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Something
When My Guitar Gently Weeps
The Long And Winding Road

Yes, just crap.
