Ok, got a guitar, now I need help with an Amp :)

Hi again,

Well I got myself a set of DG20 and waiting for a 62' vintage styled Fender (from a manufacturer called Diego, based somewhere in Europe, I think).

Now I need to choose an amp.

Should I get one of those DSP effects amps like Marshall MG50DFX or Fender Dyna Touch Plus Princeton 65 DSP, Or, should I get a regular amp and add effects later on?

In any case (with or without DSP effects) which amps would you recommend?

BTW, I need a low power amp since I'll be playing at home and currently have no intention to perform with it.

You'll have much more options if you buy a "normal" amp and then buy an effects pedal apart.

Oh never mind.

Some of the new effect amps on the market are pretty good but I still prefer a standard amp with pedals. You can tailor your sound a bit better IMO.

Look for something in the 15 to 25 watt range for home use so you won't piss off the neighbors. Most of those come with a headphone jack too, so you can plug yer ears in and only you can hear your mistakes... I play quite a bit with my phones, I have two kids and the noise would drive them and my wife nuts.....

I have two amps in that power range. An older (1985ish) Peavy audition 20. I like it quite a bit It has pre and post amp controls with push/pull overdrive modulation: and bass-mid-treb equalization. All pushed through one 10" speaker cone.

I also have a Marshall Micro Stack. A 15 watt head with basically the same controls as my Peavy, but the head feeds two 10" speakers in two seperate small cabs. Looks and performs just like the big Marshals, but in a small room sized package.

I have actually used the Marshal rig for playing smaller gigs in rooms of less that 50 people, sounds quite good.

Pedal wise I have a mixture of about six.

1) DOD stereo chorus, basic, simple, sounds great
2) Cry Baby Wha pedal: the original, gotta have one
3) DOD overdrive: When I need to CRUNCH
4) Digitech Phaser:
5) Digitech Compressor:
6) Digitech Reverb:

The last three from Digitech can be used alone or in conjunction with each other to produce a myriad of effects. Your imagination is the limit.

I'd have to recommend a Fender Super Reverb (they are a top of the line, kick butt type amp), but they are probably more than 15w. Not sure, but I think 50w models might be available. Ultimately, it just depends on what you want in your sound repertoire as to what effects to get with that (likewise for what amp you choose). As Fulghum has already stated, I'd also recommend building your own effects "unit", although there are some impressive all-in-one type boxes [digital, I think] available now. Hope that helps...

I also have a Crate BV120 Blue Voodoo head (120 watts) that drives a Crate 4x12 cab....

That thing is so loud even Pete Townshend can hear it..

I've been looking around at effect units, as I see it there are 3 kinds:

- Foot Pedals
- Foot Processors
- Racks

Anyone care to give his opinions on the three, pros and cons, advantages of one over another?
