If you like bluesy sort of guitar playing try 88 Elmira Street by Danny Gatton, the last track is a nice slide guitar song.

No-one else could've done a cover of The Simpsons like his on that album, its even got a speedy little banjo solo.

I've been playing guitar for about 2 1/2 years. I'm 14 and i've been kind of sheltered from the world until iwas about 12. I always thought just the sound of an electric guitar was awesome, i started diggin punk and stuff then my dad turned me on to some SRV. He has influenced me most, also Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Dave Gilmour, Kirk Hammett, and Joe Satriani.

As I mentioned at the start of this thread, Terry Kath of Chicago was a big influence on me in the early days. I found a great site dedicated to Kath last week. Believe it or not Jimi Hendrix was a big fan of Kath's. For those of you who know of Kath's work or those that want to learn more.. here's the site..

Since I resurrected this thread I may as well update some recent influences on my playing over the last year..

Richard Thompson: I picked up his latest release "Old Kit Bag", some amazing work I must say. I have been trying to emulate his fingerstyle, but I have a long way to go to get to his level. Give a listen to the building solo at the end of "A Love You Can't Survive"...... just beautiful.

Peter Frampton: I bought a talk box about 9 months ago,, still playing with it to really get the hang of it, but I've been listening to "Show Me The Way", "Do You Feel Like We Do?", and "Doobie Wah"" quite a bit.

Pete Anderson: Pete is Dwight Yocum's guitar player..I know ..Country...but this guy cooks. Much like Knopfler this fella does not use a pick ever. His style is more Honkey-Tonk, but really quick and very accurate. Listen to "Long White Caddilac".

Mark Knopfler: His latest solo work "Ragpickers Dream" is just amazing..

screw what i said before.
My rocking stoner neighbor gave me the tape of Joe Satriani's "Surfing with the alien". That made me start playing. So after that i got into metallica and started learning metallica riffs. then i got into SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, Gilmour, Petrucci, Corgan,

And a mighty fine pedigree that is my friend..One doesn't need many other influences with those three topping the list.

I forgot to mention Satriani.

Right now I'm listening to his cover of "Sleep Walk". Amazing tone. True to the original with just the right amount of flourish.
One thing I like about Joe, even though he can shred with the best, he is usually restrained and tasteful. Certainly one of my all-timers.

I agree. Satriani carries a great deal of emotion.

My influences included many named including Dave G., Jimmy Page, Robin Tower, Steve Howe, and Al Di Meola.

I also love the eastern scales of John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra) especially Birds of Fire.

Lately I've also been jamming to Gary Hoey - not the Christmas stuff but the classical. Interesting bent. Getting me back to music basics.

The first time I heard the opening riff in Monkey Man by the Stones is the moment I knew I had to learn to play the guitar.....
something about it runs chills up my spine to this day
Other influential players for me :
Dave of course
Robbie Robertson
Delaney Bramlett
Joe Walsh
my playing still resounds with Keithisms
