Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

Now that I listen to it again, the word he says sounds rather like "falk", as though he's trying to walk a fine line between actually SAYING what he wants to, and what he thinks will get air time for the song. If I recall, "Candy and a Currant Bun" was supposed to be a radio single. Back then, I think radio stations might have been a little more controlling about what words were allowed on radio.

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

Exactly.
After all the song was already a censored version of "Let's roll another one"... which didn't contain the f*ck line though.

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

The BBC only objected to the drug references (and, apparently, the veiled references to cross-dressing in Arnold Layne), they didn't have a problem with the f-word.

But still, it was some 30 years ago. Different times, indeed.

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

I agree with FWr; it sounds like 'falk'. I always thought it was 'walk', but maybe Syd said it a bit differently to get it past the BBC, who weren't going to listen to the song closely enough to find it.

And the F-word was a pretty big thing back then, I would think. 10 years later ('77), Steve Jones (of the Sex Pistols) would call TV host Bill Grundy a "dirty bastard', a 'dirty f**cker', and a 'f**king rotter' (to his face) on national TV. That got a LOT of press coverage. I don't think that the BBC would allow 'f**k' on the air in '67. I just don't see it happening.

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

Bill Grundy deserved what he got. I mean, really, to ask The Sex Pistols, the enfant terribles of English pop music, to say something 'outrageous' live on air...

What the hell was he thinking??

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

Okay. You're right and I'm wrong. It's "please just falk with me." That makes a lot more sense in context.

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

Just as a thing, in the same year 1967 The Doors recorded their song "The End". They had to censor the line "mother, I want to **** you". And also, the American television had a problem with the line "Girl we couldn't get much higher". So there was some big censorship in the 60s.

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

I'm not arguing with that. But Arnold Layne was banned for its references to cross-dressing, not for the use of the word which many people hear as "****". Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

could someone here teach me how to like 'Keep Talking'? I've heard the version on Pulse and the Studio version many times and i still think its absolute dogshit. Could someone explain what they like about it?

Could someone also teach me how to like poles apart? I've never seen much in that song either. The only songs that I really think GENUINELY work in TDB are 'High Hopes', 'Wearing the Inside Out', 'Coming Back to Life', 'Cluster One' and 'Marooned'.

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

I dunno, I liked PA and even KT at first, but now I think the whole album is shite so I can't really help you on this matter. The only reason I listen to TDB anymore is... actually I don't listen to TDB anymore. I can hardly tolerate Echoes because of the TDB tracks.

Re: Favorite Division Bell Moments

i dont own echoes nor have i ever heard it, so i'm slightly out of my element here but i have seen the track list. I think that it was a good idea to put High Hopes on, but it should have been the last track instead of bike (no disrespect to bike, i just dont think it would make a good finisher). Yeah, i just don't get the Divison Bell. People say its one of their favourite albums. Some people say it is their favourite. I really cant see why. Its not terrible but it doesnt stack up very well against floyd's older stuff. Also people say the Final Cut is their worst album when its actually really good. I dont get it.

I know. Diff'rent strokes, I suppose. But I don't want to have to grit my teeth to enjoy something.
