Favorite Division Bell Moments

The middle section of "Take it Back" has to be my favorite. That whole song means a lot to me because it reminds of a certain place in my life where that song fits so well.

ok, you might be right. The reasons you mentioned are pretty much the reasons i think it's dogshit. The lyrics expecially. But i just had another listen to it, and you're right, it does have a strong beat and the guitar/keyboard solo is really effective. I think itll take some time before i can look beyond all the stuff they did wrong in that song, but thanks for opening up my ears slightly.

I don't know, the lyrics aren't as bad as a lot of people make them out to be. Having once been in a situation where I had to make a difficult confrontation--and I nearly passed out from the stress of the situation--I can say it actually describes the feelings of a situation like that pretty accurately.

well, yeah that might be true but Dave is just so useless with words compared to Roger, most of his lyrics just sound like he's got something to say but he can't find a provocative way of saying it. So when he says it it just sounds forced. And because his singing is sometimes uninspired and the melodies on TDB are lacking slightly, it just isn't... I dunno, its hard to describe. Roger, on the other hand, can sing about something like his father dying in the war and his left wing political views, and make it fascinating just because he has that clarity of expression that Dave doesn't and because he signs things like he means them.

By the way, Rick Wright does better in this department than dave.

Although, to Mr. Gilmour's credit, just about ANYONE will look like a weak lyricist, next to Mr. Waters. I mean, Mr. Waters is one of the greats of the entire rock and roll world, when it comes to lyrics. It's not an easy standard to meet. I certainly couldn't do it, as much as I love to write poetry and lyrics.

Not as bad as people make them out to be? Let's be serious here. Most of the lyrical content of that song involves short, repetitive phrases about not talking, and is followed by a "philisophical" statement by steven hawking. Yech.

"Coming Back to Life" - the solo at the very start is indeed quite tasty (and the lyrics of the song are superb!).

You could say this song was about any relationship, whether it be about a divorce, or a falling out between two friends (something the band would all be familiar with).

Anyhow, the lyrics describe two people the broken relationship between them – one is getting on with their life; the other remains trapped in the past, unable to get over their quarrel with the other person. Taking a heavenly ride through their silence, the narrator is saying that they have accepted what has happened, and know that the time is right for moving on with their life (heading into the shining sun is a euphemism for this).

David is more direct in his lyrical approach, but I would hardly say he's "useless". In the case of "Coming Back to Life" Dave has written very good lyrics. He's being direct, but not to the point where you can't put your own spin on the meaning of the song.

the lyrics to 'coming back to life' are certainly some of his best. actually, the lyrics that he writes by himself (i.e. coming back to life) are generally much better than the lyrics he writes with his wife or another callaborator. People criticise him for 'needing' his wife's assistance to write lyrics when his lyrics acutally seem to suffer slightly when hes working with someone else

Well we can't know that for certain... I mean, the lyrics might have been even WORSE before the collaborators fixed 'em up.
