Re: newbie help

Hey, why not head to Kazaa, and just download all kinds of Floyd music. That way, you can listen, and then decide which album appeals to you the most, and go buy it then.

Re: newbie help

Yeah- but with music of this depth and calibre, do you really want to listen to it from piss PC speakers + missing most of the low end anyway?

Bollocks to that-

Get out there and buy the real thing, cheapskates (as it'll do you good to get out a bit anyway)! Look, if it aids your cause at all, buy it on secondhand vinyl, so that the evil record companies won't benfit.

Cheers,

Mark

Re: newbie help

Pardon me sir...
I do own Pink Floyd CD's. I am merely suggesting this so that our friend may sample the Floyd Works, and decide for himself which album he'd like to start off with.
Now of course, if you have a CD creator program, you can then play this music, on the stereo system of your choice. Ahhh...but with Floyd, whether it be radio/or amphitheatre, it all sounds good.

Re: newbie help

Brilliant, just brilliant. The only difference between your first Floyd purchase and mine is that mine was 3 quid.

Good on you + enjoy + welcome!

Do they still press "new" vinyl of albums like DSOTM, Piper, etc? The reason I ask is that all the vinyl I have is secondhand and I fear that if I actually play it, it would end up ruined in one way or another. (Not to mention the fact that I did play WYWH and it sounded horrible with all the scratches.) But I'd like to hear to it on vinyl.

By the way, Dark Side, good choice, if it hooks you the way it hooked me it won't be long now before you buy all of their albums, even the bad ones.

I suppose it's the story of everyone of us.

Re: newbie help

My old DSOTM vinyl after almost 30 years of service is so scratched I'm planning to buy it on cd.
idioteque, if you'll enjoy it, your next should be Meddle.

Re: newbie help

NNJ: Capitol stopped pressing vinyl back in 1992.
I was lucky enough to buy a mint DSOTM from that last pressing, which is as new as I can get it. And it sound incredibly good. I only play it on special occasions, though, because it IS mint, after all.
You can find reletively clean versions of DSOTM, WYWH, and The Wall, because they sold in mass numbers.
Buy one, get a record player if needed, and bask in the glory of vinyl. You'll love it.

Re: newbie help

Vinyl is great, all that snap, crackle and pop really enhances the listening experience I always find.

I have several on vinyl, but as I said I have tried to listen to WYWH, and it was scratched and warped beyond recognition. And I am quite afraid to try to play DSOTM and others because I am afraid the same fate will befall them. I guess I'l have to buy duplicates, just to play it safe.

By the way, just ordered a NM TFC from ebay.

Re: newbie help

The only way you can warp a record is to expose it to heat. Playing a record won't warp it, and playing a record doesen't put scratches on it (as long as you aren't pulling a DJ-type thing and working at the wheels of steel.... )

All of those problems are in the handling of the record, which should always be by the edges of the vinyl.
