Talking newbie help

I think that's an appropriate title..hmmm

This is kind of tedious, but ive heard many great thing's about Pink Floyd, yet i own none of their music. Ive read review's, but there not much help.

I was wondering if you fantabulous people could recommend me an album to start me off? say the easiest too get into? or your personal favourite's? anything!! because i want to purchase something, but i need Direction !

Bleh! Sorry if this is a bit pointless

Don't kill me!

Yes, I agree, Dark Side Of The Moon is my recommendation without any doubt.

Echoes - The Best of Pink Floyd is also very good for newbies of the band but in addition to Dark Side, which is a milestone of the 20th century music.

I suppose the Echoes best of cd would be the best point of entry for anyone totally unfamilliar with Floyd.

Echoes is a possibility...though I suggest starting with a full album, because it's probably a good idea to get a taste of Pink Floyd's concept-album style. I'd suggest either Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here. Dark Side of the Moon is very universal. Wish You Were Here allows you to see what a longer suite sounds like. Both should be among your first purchases, I think, and I would follow them with Meddle.

My two cents, anyway...

Dark Side of the Moon . Definately.

And, if you can, get the compilation Relics after that. Then Meddle.

Are you following your personal taste here or do you really think Relics is a good overlook of the band's career?

I reckon 'Echoes: The best of Pink Floyd" would be a good start. It'll allow you to pick and choose between the rather peaky/troughy quality contrast displayed over the years. As mentioned, 'Relics' is a good sampler, but maybe not the greatest starting point, as some of the music is a little dated. 'Dark Side of the Moon', you can't really go wrong with, and it doesn't hold the title of 'Classic Album' for nothing. That's where a lot of people start with Floyd, and you probably won't be disappointed with your purchase. If I may make a suggestion, have a browse of the rather comprehensive discography featured on this very site, but beware of anything released post '79 ('Is there anybody out there' -a live version of 'The Wall' excepted).

Good luck and happy listening ,

Marko

Dr. Cheese: I think Relics is the best compilation of the early stuff out there. It's not great, but I got Dark Side and Relics on the same day, and look where it got me.

1. Buy Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd
2. Listen carefully.
3. Locate your favourite songs on the collection.
4. Consult the liner notes as to which albums those songs are on.
5. Purchase those albums.
6. When you've gotten through those, purchase Obscured By Clouds, and Atom Heart Mother, because there aren't any songs from either of those fantastic albums on Echoes.
7. Buy the rest of the Floyd back catalogue.
8. Lather, rinse, repeat.
