Favorite Concerts/Recent Shows...

Hey. Being a musician, and working in music industry related fields for several years, I'd kinda like to hear about some of your live concert reviews...stuff like "My favorite concert...", or "...A recent live performance...", or even "The first concert I ever saw..." kind of material. Try to include exactly why you liked/disliked a particular artist, if you would. Thanks.

Am going to go see Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers tonight...can't give a review just yet, but, have seen them before, and Jimmy is a extremely talented guitarist...think it will be a good show.

One of most beautiful and unforgettable concerts of my life: Tom Waits live (in Florence, Italy). This man is a true great artist and I have to be honest, he almost moved me to tears, with songs like Invitation To The Blues, Time... it was his first time in concert here in Italy and the applauses were deafening after each song. Great musicians, great songs, great feeling in the theatre... Tom's werewolf voice, the whole audience singing along Innocent When You Dream... a wonderful night.

I've seen Iggy Pop, System of a Down, and Against All Authority (whose set ended after three songs, when the guitarist threw down his axe and stalked offstage).
I've also been witness to many punk shows put on by a punk record store in my town, called Sound Idea. They've built their own scene down there, it's pretty cool.

Iggy Pop was crazy, being the crazy guy that he is. An absolutely awesome performer.
System of a Down was also awesome, the only problem being the acoustics of the arena I saw them in.

I haven't been to many shows, but the ones I've been to have all been good experiences.

Of course Roger's show in 99. But also, TMBG are great live, and some local stuff seen in clubs here.

Debating wether or not to buy Rush tickets this Saturday.

NNJ: Do it - I don't think you'll be disappointed. 3 hours of great music. And to see rock's greatest drummer, Neil Peart, back at the drum kit after the sucky six years he's had (daughter killed in car accident, wife died from cancer) - that alone is worth the price of admission. He's amazing.

Hmmm...see my Roger Waters Live 2002 and David Gilmour Live threads on this site for reviews of their shows this year. They appear in the respective artist's section here. I like them because they are, or were, the Pink Floyd.

Stevie Wonder: my favourite solo artist, his three shows I attended were all good, but the last two were pitifully short so I have since sworn off Live Stevie concerts. There haven't been any since the last one I attended, so I guess it's academic.

Cyndi Lauper at London's Hammersmith Apollo, was a much better show than I'd expected - even though it was standing room only - what a showwoman. I like her because she can sing her arse off, squeaky bits notwithstanding.

Kitaro's electronic concert at London's Dominion Theatre was a revelation and highly enjoyable. His was some of my favourite "plink-plink" techno pop of the 80's and his Live show was most impressive, expecially the huge Kodo drum bit.

The least said about Andy Williams and Diana Ross, the better.

Prince at Wembley Arena was a good show, but never again will I allow an ex to buy me concert tickets because we were up "in the Gods" and right underneath a loudspeaker, and after a few minutes my hearing became distorted and I couldn't really enjoy it. Prince may be a purple peculiarity but he sho' can play that geetar.

Live Aid, was...well, Live Aid and one should always be present when history is being made. David Bowie and Bryan Ferry were most impressive and Staus Quo and Phil Collins were the least. Was sat directly opposite the Prince and Princess of Wales, so that was an extra bonus.

Liza Minnelli at the Royal Albert Hall was an excellent show and proved that she does (did) not have to rely upon her mother's fame for recognition: the girl is a belter in her own right. If a homo cannot witness St. Judy of the Garland Live, then her daughter would just have to do. :o

Of course, Pink Floyd's The Wall in London's Earls Court was one of the highlights of my life. Enough said.

Let's see...who else...oh yes! Ravi Shankar...the legendary Ravi Shanker at the Royal Festival Hall. Another bit of music history right in front of me. Sadly, I had a searing headache the entire evening so couldn't properly appreciate the music.

Ahh...Van Halen was my first ever Rock concert at the Boise, Idaho Simplot Staduim Fieldhouse. It took ages to get into the venue, and they blew a fuse during their first song, but it was a very good show in spite of those little blips. Eddy Van Halen plays a mean guitar as well, and David Lee Roth was typically egotistical but miles better than whomever it was replaced him.

Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy and Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople) were all part of my early Rockucation.

I should have stayed to see Journey and the Rolling Stones at Chicago's Soldier Field, but being 17, straight out of Compton and in a huge stadium FULL of white people was a bit too much too soon for me, so I scarpered. I felt like a black speck on a white sheet. :o

Get terminalfrost's reviews because that man has been to ever so many concerts in his short life.

My recent live performance was Ozzfest Atlanta. I loved, the BLS performance, Rob Zombie, and Ozzy of course. I was in the pit, front row, and was honestly frightened when System of a Down came out. I thought for sure, by the looks of the people behind me beating eachother, that my life's end was very near....but as you can see, I survived

Okay...here we go... a list of almost all the shows I've been to, not necessarily in order (and please bear in mind - I am a child of the 80's!)

First concert ever: Duran Duran (see above disclaimer!)
Julian Lennon
The Monkees (Package tours all, so loads of acts were with them - I saw this band an unbelievable THREE times...LOL)
Chuck Berry
Pink Floyd (MLOR)
Bad Company
Billy and the Boingers - oh, wait, nevermind...

and then I graduated high school...

Belinda Carlisle (WORST CONCERT EVER!! I still can't believe I put out money for THAT one- no offense, Holly...)
Paul McCartney
Eric Clapton
The Who
Melissa Etheridge (and boy, is there a story behind THAT one...LOL)
Blood, Sweat and Tears (Live free concert in the park sorta thing...)
Moody Blues (with my ex-husband - one of the first clues that marriage was doomed was a) he'd never heard of them, and b) he wasn't able to understand my Floydian fixation...)
Pink Floyd (TDB)
Roger Waters (three times - once in '99, twice in '00)
David Gilmour (the three London shows this year - and my holy grail, quite frankly, particularly when Kate appeared...!)

I know I'm leaving a bunch out, too, but that's the bulk of the more memorable ones.

So go ahead, and call me a geek. I know I am.

Cheers!

My favourite concert ever has to be Roger Waters Live in June 2002. The whole band was just amazing, unfortunately Doyle wasn't on guitar but Roger's son was on keyboards! I am too young to have ever seen the Floyd play so this is the closest I have got. I have to say the worst concert I have ever been to was Incubus, don't ask me why I bought that ticket, they were awful!!! Oh yeah, Happy Birthday Roger!!

Sounds like some excellent shows, except for the Andy Williams, and Belinda Carlisle . Throw on a bit of Wayne Newton and you'd have the Burmuda Triangle of music

I have seen some of the bands/artists listed, but there are many that I haven't, so thanks for the recommendations...am definitely sold on the Tom Waits (saw him on 'Letterman' show singing through a bullhorn), but the jury is still out on Liza Minnelli, I know she's got a great voice, but I can only take so much jazz before my head explodes...(there isn't a staring, catatonic 'smiley', is there?) What kind of music would you call it? Would like to have seen Thin Lizzy, but, will have to settle for old recordings (Live Thin Lizzy is a good recording, imo).

Anyway, the most recent performance for me was last night's "Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers" show. I don't think I have the words (or brain cells) to describe it and do it justice, but I will try and hit a few highlights, I guess...

First of all, It had been almost a year and a half since their last trip through here, so, whenever Jimmy is around, it's just like Christmas for the staff. 'The Drivers' [saxophone, drums, and bass) started things off, joined soon after by Jimmy, to do an original instrumental rhythm and blues piece, I think. Then they jumped into their rockin' blues stuff. About half-way through the 1st set, they broke it all down to a real clean and soul-full blues piece that caused me to seek a better vantage point; the room was full so I grabbed a spot at the end of the bar.

Thackery is quite amazing. He is to 'the Drivers' what Reggie Jackson was to the Yankees (sorry for the baseball analogy, but he IS "the straw that stirs the drink"). He was playing an old Stratocaster that looked as though all the finish had been worn off. He can make it wail, too! By about the end of the 1st set, you could tell that Jimmy was ready to pull out all the stops.

Time for a re-fueling break.

During the break I spotted another of my favorite blues-guitar players (Billy Crawford) heading to the back room to hang out with Jimmy. How good do you have to be to have professionals come out and hear you? But, I wasn't too surprised because they both record for the "Blind Pig" (possible Floyd reference?) label.

2nd set: Jimmy breaks out a solid maple Strat, with 'whammy bar', of course. They did "Detroit Iron" for 'the staff'. Also did a song that is breaking ground as a new genre...can't remember the name of it right now, but is a 'surfabilly blues' song where The guitar and sax trade leads--awesome. Thackery did one Jimi Hendrix cover (well, not actually a Hendrix song but...), without the band, "The Star Spangled Banner."

The encore smoked.

Then came the after the show party...several of the customers had taken the opportunity to 'brown bag' their favorite elixers, and being 'in the hills' means that some of East Tennessee's best homemade concoctions were on hand, and passed around.
. Ouch.

Oh, yeah. There was one small incident where one of the bartenders (soon after 'sampling' some grape 'juice') keeled over, falling hard onto the floor...passed out cold...just like someone had flipped a light switch. He was all right, though.

A word of warning: 1) If you ever go to a 'Jimmy Thackery and the Driver's' show, just go ahead and plan to be a few hours late to work, school, or whatever, the following day...or better yet, take the day off...and 2) hide enough money in your shoe to make sure you have cab fare home.

Ha, ha, ha, BoaB - short life - that's a good one

Once I figure out how the link to the list of the concerts that I've been to (from the other thread), I'll do it. Way too many concerts to review, but if someone has a question about a particular show, I'd be glad to try to remember it.
