Talking 8 track

The eight-track tape version of "Animals" sported additional material not available on any other medium. In 1976, session guitarist Snowy White was put in touch with the band via Kate Bush's manager. The word was that Pink Floyd was looking for an axe man to augment its touring line-up, and had been trying to get ahold of White. Eventually White visited the band in the studio as it was recording Animals. Waters suggested they might as well put him to work right then and there. The result was "Pigs on the Wing." However, in the end, the song would be split into two parts: Part one began the album, and the second half ended it. Only those lucky (?) enough to purchase the album on eight-track got to hear the song as it was originally recorded, with parts one and two connected by a soaring guitar solo courtesy of White. :o! I am getting that 8-track!

Nah, if the guitar solo was any good, it would have gone on the CD. Don't bother.

Actually Snowy White's solo IS rather good and POTW is very enjoyable in this form. However the solo is almost the same performed by Snowy on the live version of PITW part 2 during the 1977 tour, as documented by various bootlegs.

You can also find PITW part 1 & 2 from the 8-track on some bootleg CDs and, obviously, with a bit of luck, on the net.

Just out of curiosity....what the he** you gonna play it on????

The only 8 track player that I know of that i could possibly get my hands on right now is in the dash of my Mother in Laws, '73 Mustang convertable, and that is in storage in Illinios. I don't eve know if the 8 track works......

8-track players are cheap, if you hit the right spots (yard sales, Salvation Army).

I really like Master of Puppets by Metallica, 'cos it's got 8 tracks.

Do I win?

Yes. You do.

Congratulations. You are the proud owner of a black gerbil, complete with cage, woodchips, and spinny excercise wheel.

Have fun.

Just don't let it get loose in the nether regions.

By the way, the reason it didn't go on the CD was because Roger had Snowy record it for the 8-track only. In other words, it wouldn't be the original album with it on.

Get Snowy's solo album, Gold Top. The 8-Track version is on this CD and it sounds ABSOLUTELY MIND-BLOWING. This version is one of my favourite Floyd tracks of all time.

8-Tracks still rule. I listen to them all the time on my nifty flying saucer-shaped portable player from the 70's. I have almost all the Pink Floyd albums on 8-track, but not as many as my friend Steve does, take a look...
