I still use square, although it was way before my time, me being born in the eighties. Quality phrase....bunch of squares.

'Echoes' is the apex of everything the band ever did

While Echoes is very very good, I don't think it's their Magnum Opus. Gilmour's guitar bits in it are the highlight for me, the rest of it could be shortened by 5 minutes and it wouldn't hurt my feelings. However, if a single note was cut from SOYCD 1-9 it would be a travesty.

it seems that ANY versions of 'SOYCD' outside of the WYWH album has been changed notibly.

Echoes is great. SOYCD is a bit better. Echoes is just an enlarged song, that could have been 5minutes long (the sung part). SOYCD is a mini-symphony.

For another thing discussed in this thread: I don't understand why did they release the double-CD Echoes with such edits, when they re-released A collection of great dance songs in 2001. They should have better created a collection of rarities. still, Storm Thorgerson's artwork for Echoes is great.

BTW A collection of great dance songs is certainly representative only for the Meddle->Wall Floyd, which is the most common start of your Pink Floyd record (or mp3, whatever...) collection (unless you lived in London 1967).
Relics are representative for 1967 - 1969 stuff.
Works are ... weird.
I don't understand messing Syd's stuff and post-Syd stuff and Dark Side and AMLOR and Division Bell together like they did on Echoes.

Sigh. Yet again, as always, it comes back to "I didn't like what they did on Echoes cuz they edited some songs/put in shitty songs/didn't put in enough good songs." It's meant to be an overview of the career, to introduce the band to new fans, not to be an actual representation of the best of everything they tried.
