Why don't we all welcome a New Member?

Hello all

New to the board, and wanted to fornally introduced myself. I have been watching and reading your funny and not so funny posts for quite a while now. I felt now was about the time for me to reveal myself and start to add to the vibe.

I's approaching 30 years old and can tell you for the first 28 years of my life I hated Pink Floyd. I thought "Man, do you have to be on acid to get this stuff?"

But I had heard a few songs here and there I liked...(Another Brick, Learning to Fly, Time, etc)...and when I saw Echoes advertised, I thought "What the Hell"

Since then, in a very short period I have learned the beauty and grace of The Floyd. I found myself digging so much of Echoes that I knew I had to get more complete albums. I'd heard a lot about "The Wall" and thought I'd give it a shot. Well, once I got it I couldn't get it out of my CD player for a month. Next, was Dark Side of the Moon, which helped me understand why so many people worship this album like they do. Then I got Wish you Were Here, and fell in love with Shine On, Have a Cigar (Love those lyrics), etc....

Animals was my next, and , to date, my favorite album. David Gilmour is just incredible on this album. I have never heard another guitar player come anywhere near Alex Lifeson (of Rush) in terms of feeling and soul, until I heard Gilmour in depth.

Next, I purchased Meddle, which I don't really care for as much as the other 4, but still really enjoy. What's next? I'm not sure...any suggestions??

By the way, yes, Pink Floyd is my 2nd favorite band behind Rush. For those of you not into them, and who enjoy Gilmour's guitar, I recommend you try Rush in depth. Alex Lifeson and David Gilmour are very similar styles in my opinion.

Anyway, thanks for the ear

Hiya mate- good intro. I'd recommend 'Obscured By Clouds' as your next purchase. Glad to have you on board.

Cheers,

Mark

Welcome also
For your next album you have a choice of either delving into the older floyd in which case 'Relics' is my recommendation or stick with more contemporary floyd and go for 'Obscured by Clouds'. The other alternative is to pick out tracks you like from echoes and track down their originating albums.

If you have been watching and reading this forums for quite a while how could have you not noticed there's a welcome/introduction thread sticky in the just-babbling area...?

Welcome anyway.

:o

Hmmm...you didn't find the original Echoes mind-numbingly superb? There's a shock, but perhaps after your 30th hearing, you'll have changed your view. Perhaps not. Hey ho.

ObCows: I would have put OBC just at the end of PF's older period rather than more contemporary, but to each their own. Relics is only good for having on it the otherwise unreleased Embryo.

Obscured By Clouds should be your next purchase, IMO, well before The Division Bell. Then Piper At The Gates of Dawn, and then Saucerful of Secrets

Hi GL!
That was a nice intro! Since your a big Rush fan, maybe you can help me out. I was told that one of the members was a psychologist/psychiatrist, and that explains the great lyrics....like
"If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice."

Is this true, can you elaborate? Thanks!

Neil Peart (their drummer) is an exellent song writer, perhaps even better than ROGER WATERS, he has a lot of symbolism, and idea's in his lyrics. Sometimes I buy RUSH albums, just curious to know what my favourite modern philosopher has to say
One can't even START to appericiate RUSH without taking a look at their lyrics, their lyrics is what makes them one of the BEST rock groups. In fact I listen to RUSH way more than I listen to PF, I like to say that I like the two groups evenly, but that can only mean one thing....
By the way I'm going to go see them LIVE today!! I can't wait!! This will be the first time (believe it or not) that I'd ever seen them.

I LOVE Rush, but I don't think Lifeson can compare to Gilmour, perhaps on in some respects though, but overall..no. I would reccomend UMMAGUMMA, everyone hates that album, but I LOVE it! Perhaps you'll see it from my perspective.

So is this just his own philosophy, or did he actually have some training in human psychology? Do you know ODV??

When i say more contemporary i am comparing it to the early floyd such as piper at the gates and saucerful of secrets. IMO Meddle signalled the end of the older period and as OBC was released after this it is more contemporary, although i agree compared to the likes of DSOTM, Animals etc.. it does appear to be an older style.
Relics is good to get a better appreciation of the older floyd than by listening to just piper or saucerful etc..
Embryo was on Works not Relics

Well, I'm quite sure that he has had no training in psychology, but he reads many novels about philosophy, perhaps the person who told you he was a phychologist meant to say "philosopher". His phylosophy (which was borrowed from AYN RAND) is one I wouldn't want to describe here, because I fear you would all misunderstand, and dislike Neil Peart for it.
